In Mac OS X, every file, application, and folder has an owner. If you create a folder in your Home, for example, you are its owner and you have permission to open it, change it, or delete it. This is known as having “read/write” permissions. If you’re not the owner of a file, folder, or application, by default you have only read access, which means that you can only see the item, not make changes to it.
You may not need to change permissions very often. However, you may want to change permissions if you create a folder that you want exclusive access to.
