Department Overview:

The Anchorage School District Music Program is part of the district's Department of Fine Arts, which includes Art, Music, and Theatre.

The Anchorage School District provides music education for students at all grade levels. From kindergarten through sixth grade, all students attend Elementary Classroom Music, where they learn fundamental music concepts and apply this knowledge in many activities - listening, performing and creating. Many elementary schools also have performing groups, such as choir or recorder ensemble.

In sixth grade, students are offered their first elective class: either band or orchestra. Sixth Grade Band and Orchestra introduce students to traditional instrumental groups and prepare them for continued study at the middle school level.  ASD has one of the highest participation rates in the nation of students who choose band and orchestra, at ninety-three percent!

In addition to band and orchestra, Middle School Music offers choir classes. Several courses are generally offered in each discipline, organized by ability level and style of music, such as intermediate orchestra or jazz band.

The High School Music program is an advancement of our middle school program, offering courses at varying levels in band, choir, and orchestra. Some schools have additional music classes, such as guitar, ukulele, keyboard or AP music theory.

Many additional opportunities are available to ASD music students through Festivals and Honor Groups. These include solo and ensemble festivals as well as local and regional honor groups, which require an audition.
