The Anchorage School District is reviewing new materials for English Language Arts, grades K-5. The last adoption was in 2004. The selected materials will align the District’s K-5 English Language Arts materials with national and state standards, and instructional best practices.
This review supports the District’s goal of increasing student achievement in English Language Arts by providing instructional staff with a comprehensive literacy program which includes tools that will enable them to successfully meet the learning needs of all students.
The Anchorage School Board approved funds to support updating the English Language Arts materials, with K-2 implementation planned for the 2017-18 school year. A recommendation also will be made for the subsequent purchase of English Language Arts materials for use in grades 3-5.
Phase 1 of the review, completed in January, resulted in the selection of four finalists for more in-depth review. These publishers will conduct formal presentations about their programs for the review team and the public on March 7 and 8 at the ASD Education Center.
The presentation schedule is as follows:
Parents, students, staff, and community members are invited to take part in the review process and provide input. In addition to the publisher presentations, sample materials will be available for viewing and feedback during regular business hours at the ASD Education Center from March 6-22.
