ASD high schools host German exchange groups
Service and South high schools are currently hosting the American-side of their German American Partnership Program (GAPP) exchanges with nearly 50 students and teachers visiting from Germany. ASD German teachers, Fauna Reynvaan of Service High School and Elizabeth Dick of South High School, coordinate the program at their schools.
Bartlett, Chugiak, Dimond, Service and South high schools sent groups of students abroad last summer to participate in the German-side of the GAP-Program. Bartlett, Dimond and Chugiak hosted partner students and teachers in Anchorage during the spring of 2012, while Service and South host their visiting groups this fall. East High School plans to travel during the summer of 2013.
Schools with a GAP-Program have a partner school in Germany and conduct regular exchanges between the American and German high schools. Students live with a host family and get involved in both family and school life in the host nation. GAPP coordinators establish an ongoing relationship with the partner school which provides for years of interaction between Anchorage residents and the German communities with which they are matched.
"ASDs GAP-Programs are exemplary models of authentic linguistic and cultural exchanges that span decades and produce long-lasting relationships between sister schools in Germany and in many cases, lifelong international friendships," said Janice Gullickson, curriculum coordinator of the district's World Languages department.
Service students hosting a guest from Germany are: Ally Brawner, Molly Brockway, Rayce Carey, Stephanie Compton, Kira Davis-Weber, Noah Dean, Sean Dean, Emily Dreher, Max Eckhardt, Zachary Harder, Ava Harren, Elaina Jewett, Josie Kiehl, Danielle Lane, Kelsey Lindahl, Ava Metzger, Jacques Neptune, Rebekah Padgett, Adam Ritter, Ruben Rivard, Jim Sewell, Allison Stassel, Tim Thornley and Calum Tolbert.
South students hosting a guest from Germany are: Hayden Arend, Melanie Bartenstein, Jack Basler, Alex Bennison, Davey Biegel, Makenna Bond, Mary Crumley, Dani DePaepe, Max Durtschi, David Harland, Graham Hiles, Tyler Kirn, Sarah Lundgren, Kenton Mayfield, Madison O'Scannell, Marlaina Ross, Madison Sauder, Nicky Schneider, Luke Twenhafel and Lida Zakurdaew.
Participation in the GAP-Program exchange is open to eligible students enrolled in German classes at participating schools.
The GAP-Program began in 1976, and Alaska's first GAPP exchange began that year between Bartlett High School and Freiherr vom Stein Gymnasium in Leverkusen, Germany. That relationship lasted until 2005, with more than 1,000 students participating during the nearly three-decade partnership program.
The GAP-Program is a nonprofit high school exchange program between schools in Germany and the United States, sponsored by the German Foreign Office and by the U.S. Department of State. The program's main objective is the integration of students into the everyday life of host families and into the classroom activities of host schools to provide them with a coherent intercultural experience.
