Congratulations to Romig Middle School for placing first in the Anchorage MATHCOUNTS competition! They have advanced to the state competition, which will take place in Juneau next month. Also, congratulations to the second and third place winners in the individual category: Joseph Casello from Romig and Tyler Hoover from Goldenview Middle School, respectively.

(Anchorage, February 9, 2013) — A team of middle school Mathletes® from Romig Middle School, Anchorage won the local MATHCOUNTS competition. The top individual was Johnie Burton from Palmer Home School, Palmer, AK.
Members of the winning team are: Kat Beaudin, Foster Birnbaum, Janpal LaChappelle, and Aurora Williams with Coach John Bruce. The top three teams and top three individuals will now advance to the State Competition, to be held in Juneau on March 30, 2013.
The second, third, and fourth place teams are from Kenai Middle School, Homer Middle School and Goldenview Middle School, respectively. The second and third place individuals are Joseph Casello from Romig Middle and Tyler Hoover from Goldenview Middle, respectively.
In our increasingly technological society, those students who do not begin developing strong problem-solving, logical thinking and analytical abilities in middle school will face an uphill battle later in life if they wish to pursue a medical, scientific, mathematical, engineering or technical career. As a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students, MATHCOUNTS prepares students for future career opportunities and success. More than 6 million students across the U.S. have participated in the MATHCOUNTS program.
