School Board to host Leadership Academy for public servants interested in education

April 3, 2017

The Anchorage School Board will host a series of training sessions for current and prospective board members, and members of the general public who are interested in learning more about board leadership.

The Leadership Academy consists of monthly sessions spanning the course of the year. Sessions include topics such as board standards, governance versus management, school finance, assessments and accountability, and more.

"An effective board can positively impact student achievement and growth,” said Board President Tam Agosti-Gisler. “Boards in high-achieving districts understand how to goal set, monitor their progress with data, possess detailed knowledge about the district, and have a good working relationship with the superintendent allowing him or her to manage while the board governs. Prospective board members who complete this Leadership Academy will be prepared to ‘hit the ground running’ immediately after winning a school board seat.”

Agosti-Gisler said participants not intending to run for a school board seat will find the Leadership Academy prepares them to be effective education volunteers and advocates in the community.

Those interested in participating can learn more about the academy’s schedule of free, monthly sessions and complete an application at www.asdk12.org/asdleads.

Those who sign up for the Leadership Academy are strongly encouraged to attend every session, although it is not required. Those who complete a majority of the sessions offered will receive an Anchorage School Board Leadership Academy graduation certificate.
