Social-emotional learning is the process through which we learn to recognize and manage emotions, care about others, make good decisions, behave ethically and responsibly, develop positive relationships and avoid negative behaviors.

Gifted Program hosts Gifted Students Fair
The Gifted Program is hosting a High School Opportunities for Gifted Students Fair on January 14th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the ASD Education Center atrium. This event will complement the districtwide alternatives fair by providing an opportunity to explore programs further with a specific focus on gifted needs. This is an important event for students in grades 8-12 who may be interested in programs such as AP classes, International Baccalaureate and the Gifted Mentorship Program. Representatives from different alternative learning communities in the district will also be on hand to answer questions students and parents may have about specific programs. For further questions, please contact Merri Kae VanderPloeg at 742-3794.

AT&T donates $50,000 to district
ASD Connect Banner As part of AT&T's nationwide Aspire initiative to strengthen student success and workforce readiness, THE AT&T Foundation has donated $100,000 to two Alaska school districts. Donations of $50,000 each were made to the Anchorage School District and the Bering Straits School District.
"The success of our youth affects us all - from the students themselves to our need for an educated workforce," said Mike Felix, president, AT&T Alaska. "With this program, we're helping Alaska school districts look for ways to encourage students to stay motivated to graduate and to see how their choices today can lead to better futures."

West High wins 9th straight We the People competition
For the ninth year in a row, West Anchorage High School students won the state We the People competition. The West team will now compete in the National Finals in Washington D.C. On April 24-26, 2010.

The 2009 West High team took top honors at last year's national competition for Unit IV - Constitution Shapes Institutions. The team successfully argued the question: "How did the values and principles embodied in the Constitution shape American institutions and practices?". The West team has placed a total of five times at the national level.

The We the People competition involves entire classes making presentations and answering questions on constitutional topics before a panel of judges recruited from across the country.

Four other ASD High Schools competed at the state level this year: Dimond, Service, Steller and South.
