Awardees create welcoming atmosphere to visitors, students, parents and staff

"We know that our students do better when they learn in a welcoming environment. We also want our parents and community members to feel comfortable and welcome at our schools. That's why good customer service is critical to the day-to-day operation of the Anchorage School District," said Superintendent Carol Comeau.

To support the district's mission to educate all students for success in life, the Anchorage School Board set a goal for all ASD departments to provide good customer service, both internally and externally.

To encourage and reward schools and departments that consistently provide outstanding customer service and welcoming environments, the district established the Gold Star Customer Service Program. This is the program's inaugural year.

Award nominees were evaluated through a thorough application and "secret shopper" process. Two levels of awards were issued; Stars are those who provide excellent service, and Gold Stars the highest level award - were given to those rated exemplary.

The judges noted these outstanding attributes among the Gold Star winners:

Also demonstrating excellent customer service, the following schools and department each achieved Customer Service Star status:

The board will recognize all customer service award winners at its meeting tonight.

"Congratulations to the Gold Star Award winners and Customer Service Stars," said Heather Sawyer, executive director of Communications. "These schools and departments showed that they truly understand the importance of providing excellent customer service. Our judges were impressed by the employees' welcoming attitudes, patience, breadth of knowledge, and passion for what they do."

In addition to board recognition, Gold Star winners will also receive banner signage for their school or department, a framed certificate and peer recognition.
