Awardees create welcoming atmosphere to visitors, students, parents and staff
"We know that our students do better when they learn in a welcoming environment. We also want our parents and community members to feel comfortable and welcome in our schools. That's why customer service is critical to the day-to-day operation of the Anchorage School District," said Superintendent Carol Comeau.
To encourage and reward schools and departments that consistently provide outstanding customer service and welcoming environments, the district established the Gold Star Customer Service Program. This is the program's second year.
Award nominees were evaluated through a thorough application and "secret shopper" process. Two levels of awards were issued; Stars are those who provide excellent service, and Gold Stars – the highest level award - were given to those rated exemplary.
The judges noted these outstanding attributes offered by the Gold Star winner:
STEP Center –every staff member that interacted with the secret shoppers consistently provided above-and-beyond service. Staff knew its resources, made them available and was very welcoming to visitors and callers.
Also demonstrating excellent customer service, the following school achieved Customer Service Star status:
Chugiak Elementary School – judges were impressed with staff's politeness and thoughtfulness.
The board will recognize all customer service award winners at its meeting tonight.
"We expect all of our schools and departments to deliver good customer service. These award winners truly wowed the judges and showed that they have embraced the importance of customer service," said Heather Sawyer, executive director of Communications. "They recognize that customer service begins before the customer even walks in the door or picks up the phone, and continues long after they say, 'goodbye.'"
In addition to board recognition, Gold Star winners will also receive banner signage for their school or department, a framed certificate and peer recognition.
The district regularly offers customer service training to employees and provides staff with a Customer Service Guide that outlines the keys to good service and provides easy-access tips to implement in both the day-to-day work routine and in difficult situations.
