Creating Successful Futures (CSF) Program

CSF II: Social-Emotional Learning Intensive for 4th-6th graders

The SEL Intensive is a structured 10-week group training program for 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. The program is designed to helps students with social skills, anger management, and problem solving.

Groups of 8-10 students meet one hour, three times a week for a total of 30 hours at their school. Students will learn and role play social skills, anger management strategies, and problem solving skills. Daily homework will reinforce the skills learned in the group.

Selected elementary schools will have SEL trained counselors assigned to complete 10-week groups. School staff, families, and counselors work together with students to reinforce the skills they are learning.

Who may benefit from an SEL intensive?

Student who have difficulties managing anger, ineffective problem solving skills, limited social skills, and discipline issues at school.

Is this program designed for every child with these difficulties?Social-Emotional Learning Instensive

No. This grant-funded program is designed to serve students who are not already receiving extensive special education, psychological, or counseling services. The goal is to reach under-served intermediate students who are able to respond to a short-term training program.

How are students referred?

Elementary school teams and the SEL counselors will collaborate to identify 8-10 intermediate students to participate in groups. All students must have a signed parent permission form. For more information contact the SEL counselors listed below.

Patricia McRae is the Executive Director of Elementary Education for the Anchorage School District. In addition to her responsibilities as an educational leader for all of the Anchorage School District elementary schools, she coordinates the Creating Successful Futures Program.
