April
Quyana to Joe Macon at Mount Iliamna School! Joe is our building Building Plant Operator. On a daily basis he goes above and beyond the call of duty and helps out with any and everything around Mount I. He knows all the kids’ names and is always available to assist them. His support of our program and our students is not something I can put into words.
He also keeps our building in tip top shape and helps us with whatever we might need from a new table to something off the wall. He often does all of this while smiling and singing in the halls. He makes our hallways much brighter with his spirit! Thanks Joe!
- Destiny Hornstein, teacher
Quyana to Ms. Linda Terry, Mr. Brian Gornick, and Mr. Creed Campbell at Bartlett High School Humanities Interdisciplinary Program! A HUGE “thank you” goes to all three teachers in the HIP program. My daughter has grown into a great writer and debater. She is graduating with honors with the help and support of these teachers.
- Kelly Maxim, parent
Quyana to Ms. Carol Larson at Bartlett High School! Thank you to Ms. Larson for encouraging and helping my daughter graduate with Honors.
- Kelly Maxim, parent
Quyana to Mr. Dan Gallego at Bartlett High School! A HUGE “thank you” to Mr. Gallego for helping my daughter graduate with Honors. He worked an hour with paperwork and fixed what I was told could not be fixed. I am very proud that both my daughters are attending Bartlett and having Mr.Gallego as the principal.
- Kelly Maxim, parent
Quyana to Carolina Carr at West High School! Thank you for everything, Senora! Most of us have been challenged every day by you for multiple years, and we have learned so much in return. You expect great things from your students and hopefully future students will appreciate that instead of taking it for granted. Kudos to quality education in all languages! Te amo!
- Jocelyn Dunlop, student
Quyana to David Vano at West High School! We all want you to know how much we've enjoyed your course this year. And many will agree that you were the best English teacher we've had. Your passion for history and literature is genuinely contagious. Not to mention, the atmosphere in the classroom is curious-friendly. There have been so many great memories in the last two years - especially involving your chair. We really do wish that you could teach us every subject and follow us to college. The International Baccalaureate program at West would not be the same without you. Hopefully you see your own value because we certainly do! Thanks for two great years (well, one for some of us), Vano!
- Your grateful IB History seniors
Quyana to Keri Barter at Romig Middle School! I will always look back on Mrs. Barter's gifted English class as a crucial stepping stone to reading, loving and understanding literature. She challenged us in ways that I have yet to be challenged throughout my four years of high school. Thank you so much for making me step out of my comfort zone and leaving me with a lifelong remembrance of the the "Gettysburg Address" and "Annabelle Lee." And never will I hear the word "handicap" without thinking of "Harrison Beregeron." You are such a valuable educator and hopefully your current and future students will recognize that! It almost feels wrong that you won't be at our graduation.
- Graduating senior, 2011
Quyana to David Vano at West High School! Mr. Vano has, as a history and English teacher, been one of the most engaging and informative instructors in my memory. He takes people who are otherwise uninterested in the humanities, and builds an appreciation for English by working through the thoughts of authors like Borges and Kafka, and has brought many of us to appreciate not only the events of 20th Century History, but the importance of the study of history itself.
- Nathaniel Rubin, student
Quyana to Mr. Lange and the Chugiak Choir at Chugiak High School! Congratulations to the Chugiak High School choir San Antonio champions! Hats off to Mr. Lange...again, I can't say enough! WAY TO GO!
- Sherry Bower, parent
Quyana to Troy Hodge at Clark Middle School! The Marie Curie Team would like to thank Mr. Troy Hodge for everything that he does to keep our students and staff safe. He is a natural leader who strives to build positive relationships with students, teachers, parents, and community members. We appreciate his dedication to the education profession and ability to make an arduous task seem easy!
- Team Marie Curie at Clark Middle School
Quyana to Jennifer Tietjen at Ursa Major Elementary, Special Education Preschool! You have been an amazing asset to the preschool classroom. Thank you so much for being a great substitute seacher assistant and keeping as much consistency as possible for our little "friends." I have been very fortunate to have you working with my students during April. Keep up the great work!
- Helen Harmon, teacher
Quyana to Julie Pierce at Curriculum and Instructional Support! Assessment and Evaluation sincerely appreciates the support of Julie Pierce from Curriculum and Instructional Support provided during the processing of the SBAs. Her efficiency, accuracy, and positive disposition made it an absolute joy to work with her -- all while still providing coverage for her department. Thank you Julie.
- Laurel Vorachek, professional colleague
Quyana to Carolina Carr at West High School! Senorita Carr is one of the most dedicated teachers at my school, and one of the few who genuinely cares about her students' education and future. I can say that my time with her has been one of the most valuable in my high school career. Not only has she opened my mind to the Spanish language and the intrigues of Hispanic culture, but she has also taught me the importance of accountability and of cultural understanding. Senorita Carr is very affable and can cheer up anyone's day when they most need it, but also serious when it comes to education. I always leave with a laugh and a smile as I walk out of her classroom. She makes an intensive curriculum bearable and truly brightens up the lives of all of her students. I will always remember Senorita Carr as one of my most influential high school teachers.
- Dexter Allen, student
Quyana to David Vano at West High School! It was a privilege to have Mr. Vano as a teacher for my junior and senior years. He is a teacher that I have come to admire and truly respect as a result of his dedication to his students and his genuine concern for their education. I constantly find him going out of his way to help students one-on-one with his notoriously intensive writing assignments, spending time to tend to the interests of his students at lunch by debating over current events and sponsoring our school's Model United Nations, and dedicating the vast majority of his time to provide for our education. Mr. Vano is committed to his students, and I am very lucky to have studied under such a caring teacher. He has helped me with assignments when I needed help the most, taught me how to approach intensive courses, and has sparked my interest in history and today's world. For this, I will always remember Mr. Vano and his dedication to make responsible and educated citizens out of his students.
- Dexter Allen, student
Quyana to teachers and staff at South High School! As our son Austin nears his high school graduation I would like to take a moment to thank the teachers and staff at South. Thanks to all of Austin's teachers. You inspired and challenged him to do his best each and every day he walked into your classrooms. Your passion for your subjects helped Austin reach his goal of being accepted to Columbia University. Thanks to ASD for hiring quality teachers and offering advanced placement classes so that our children can compete to be accepted at top colleges. Thank you to Austin's counselor, Debbie Barker, for being such a huge support to Austin and for helping us fit in those pesky physical education credits in a schedule full of AP classes. And finally a very special heart felt thanks to the debate team coaches Shawn Briscoe and Katy Lovegreen, and debate sponsor Maria Skala. You helped these young kids deal with their loss and grief over Corey's death and at the same time helped them to achieve unparalleled success this year in her honor. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
- Susan and Pete Heyroth, parents
Quyana to Ellyn Derman, Nancy Moran, Anne Pfeifer, Patty Underwood, Tanya McFadden and Cindy at Inlet View Elementary! These educators have always been supportive of their students both in and out of the classroom. They make an effort to be there for current students and alumni students. Their commitment is extraordinary. They exemplify teaching and compassion - and truly make many parents and students proud to be part of the Inlet View over the years!
- Colette Moring, parent
Quyana to all Student Nutrition staff! I have been having many health issues this school year and they have been understanding and have helped me every way they can to keep my school running smoothly during my leave. I appreciate their help and understanding. I know I couldn't have done this alone. Thank you again employees for being there for me.
God bless you all. Wishing you all and your loved ones a blessed Easter.
- Trina Mattingly, Klatt Cafeteria Manager
Quyana to Julie Sarich at North Star Elementary! You are the best! Ms. Sarich brings much help for us. She’s a very patient woman and a great teacher. She gives all her best to help our son academically, and this is not an easy job. I thank you for everything.
- Emma Arana, parent
Quyana to eighth grade teachers, support staff, building plant operators, security staff, cafeteria staff and administrative staff at Clark Middle School! Thank you for making this year’s eighth grade field trip to UAA a smooth success! You all are amazingly flexible, helpful and patient. We appreciate you!
- Rachel Clingman and Kaitlin DeMarcus, peers
Quyana to Jean Ward at Chugach Optional! Jean Ward's classroom is a wondrous place filled with the warmth of her spirit, her enthusiasm for life, and passion for teaching. She inspires her students to love learning. In her class the children think of themselves as scientists, mathematicians, artists, readers and writers - and they are! Jean and her assistant, Sheila, are amazing with the children and our daughter is so lucky to have started her education with such a solid foundation as found in Jean and Sheila's "family group." Many, many sincere thanks.
- Kristin Cosgrove, parent
Quyana to Martina Bex, Staci Cox and Sue Johnson at Clark Middle School! Thank you ladies for welcoming the Sack Lunch Speaker Series speakers to share your spaces! I appreciate your flexibility and hospitality!
- Rachel Clingman, peer
Quyana to Polly Bayayok at Whaley School! This is Polly's first year with ASD, and I have been blessed to have Miss Polly as my Art Room assistant this year. She has fit in wonderfully with our students and with the staff. When we are not actively working with students or during quieter times at lunch or after school, Polly is always busy - helping set up the classroom, getting out or putting away supplies, cleaning tables, or organizing. She is kind, insightful, caring, and has a strong sense of respect. Not only do we work exceptionally well together, we have grown into a rewarding friendship as well. Stick around, Polly - we need you!
- Bev Kirk, teacher
Quyana to Heidi Krumland at Scenic Park Elementary! Heidi Krumland came to Scenic Park last year as a new teacher and has been an asset to the Scenic Park staff. She gently guides her first-graders with ease and always shows compassion and understanding for the needs of her class. She has a unique quality of quietly working with students and getting them to reach for the stars. It is obvious her love of teaching and it is so heartening to those of us teaching a long time to see an enthusiastic and capable teacher come into the fold.
- Elaine Lawson, peer
Quyana to Cathy Echols, kindergarten aide and noon supervisor at Scenic Park Elementary. Cathy has been a wonderful kindergarten aide supporting the teacher for seven years. Before that she was an able special education aide supporting students wherever she could be of service. She is very dependable and is always ready to pitch in even outside her responsibilities as an aide or noon supervisor. She makes a creative calendar bulletin board at the entrance to the school each month on her own time. Cathy is self directed, takes her job seriously, and tries to make a difference in her low key way. We are fortunate to have her on our staff
- Elaine Lawson
Quyana to Jenna Ellinwood at Huffman Elementary! Quyana to Huffman’s art teacher extraordinaire. Not only does Jenna do incredible art with all the students in school, she is willing to try to make incredible art with our students who have special needs. She learns about the abilities of all the students and tailors art projects around that so all are successful at making something beautiful. The boys wanted to make monster paper-mache heads and she made it possible! Jenna is terrific!
- Jean Walker, peer
Quyana to Chinook Elementary staff! I have worked at Chinook Elementary as a substitute teaching assistant on several occasions over the school year. Every time I have worked the whole staff has been very nice and very helpful. I love working there because the staff makes me feel welcome. Thanks Chinook Elementary staff!
- Sue Briggs, substitute teacher assistant
Quyana to Michael Kerosky, Becky Severson, Heather Coulehan, Debbie Morgan, Ann McKay Bryson, Julie Vincek, and Stan Mayra at the Safe and Drug Free Schools Department! Under the vision and care of director Michael Kerosky many amazing programs that directly support the social and emotional growth of students have taken place. With the talented support of Becky Severson, Heather Coulehan, Debbie Morgan, Ann McKay Bryson, Julie Vincek, and Stan Mayra many programs have succeeded that have made a real difference in the lives of students. In particular I want to thank the SDFS team for their behind-the-scenes effort to ensure the annual Mediator Rally for elementary students is one that inspires and celebrates hundreds of elementary aged students who work year-round to make their schools peaceable learning environments. Quyana on behalf of all of those students.
- Cheryl Childers, peer
Quyana to Natalie Hoover-Dean at Chugiak High School! Thank you so very much Natalie for all you have done for my boys these past two years. We look forward to the next few years that our kids will be blessed with your caring guidance. You go above and beyond your duties as a teacher to make sure your students are succeeding and striving for excellence. CHS and ASD are extremely lucky to have someone like you on their staff. Thank you so much!
- David and Shellie Barker parents
Quyana to Bear Valley Elementary staff! This morning we are having extremely high winds on the hillside. I was ready to park and blow into school with my child this morning. Upon arriving at school this morning the staff of Bear Valley was bundled up and escorting each child in the building so that they would be safe. The staff even looked like they were making light of the wind. What a GREAT group! Thank you!
- Bear Valley parent
Quyana to Patricia Kuilboer at Clark Middle School! On behalf of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, Alaska Alumnae Chapter, I would like to recognize Patricia Kuilboer for her outstanding service to students in the transition. - Yvonne Charles, community member
Quyana to Ron Blakeman at Maintenance! Thank you so much to Ron for hanging up our blinds and artwork for our school's front office. I walked in this morning and immediately noticed what a difference it made; we have warm fuzzy welcome to Avail feelings now when entering the front door. Again, thank you for taking the time to complete this work order for us, and for doing such a great job! Sincerely, the staff at Avail High School
- Elizabeth Dornbos, administrative assistant

- Leslie Fleming, peer
Quyana to Ms. Sparks, kindergarten, first-, and second-grade teachers at Government Hill Elementary! Thank you so much for the most enchanting under the sea performance last night! All of the sharks, eels, sea horses, and fishes were so excited and proud of their performance, and of course some (me) parents could not even hold back their tears of joy!
- Anaely León-Hernández, parent
Quyana to Janet Campbell and Stephanie Ranger at Gladys Wood Elementary! I just want to say thanks to our incredible staff at the "front of the house." These ladies happily greet our kids each day, give out band-aids, call for lunches, input Zangle items till late at night, help kids get home, keep the staff on top of things, and so much more. I am in fear of them ever retiring! There is no real job description available for an administrative assistant because it would fill a novel. This is not the job for ye of faint heart. You are the best Janet and Stephanie!
- Vicki Wolfe, teacher/peer
Quyana to Tiffany Wilson, special education at Muldoon Elementary! Tiffany Wilson deserves to be recognized on a national level. Period. Her disadvantage is that she teaches in the forgotten state of Alaska. What she does in this forgotten state, however, must be remembered. There are few teachers who sacrifice as much for their students as Tiffany Wilson. She has been threatened and assaulted by her students, yet she continues to teach because she has a true passion for special education. Essentially all of her free time is spent thinking of ways to enrich her students' lives. She has revamped special education in her classroom, much to the dismay of other teachers who simply see this as a job. As a person, Tiffany is kind, warm and gentle. As a teacher, she is the same, and her students respond to this. Tiffany Wilson is the epitome of an amazing teacher, special education or otherwise. She genuinely cares about her students, and she gets results. As the parent of a special education child, I sincerely wish that my son could have been taught by Tiffany Wilson, and I have very high standards for my children.
- Anonymous, parent and community member
Quyana to Deb Plzak, Leslie Edin, Jamette O'Bryan, Izzy Ralonde and Jenny Vail of the SBA Bash Team at Baxter Elemntary! The SBA Bash Team did an amazing job planning and decorating for our SBA Bash! - Courtney Forbes, teacher
Quyana to Mrs. Osborne at Muldoon Elementary! Yesterday, my 16-year-old grandson had to pick up my granddaughter, a student of Ms. Osborne's, because the adults on her pick up form were all unavailable. My grandson met the teacher, who took them to the office to verify he was able to pick up Cha'Miya (Hines). My grandson said she was very professional and he did not have any problem complying with her request. My daughter (Andrea Heyward) was in class at UAA but was able to give permission for Terrell (Heyward) to pick up Cha'Miya. I often worry about my grandchildren being harmed and was very relieved that Ms. Osborne took the time to check out the situation rather than accepting someone's word and sending a very vulnerable little girl off with someone the teacher did not know. I thank Ms. Osborne for keeping my treasured granddaughter safe!
- Lydia Heyward, grandparent
Quyana to Kim Rector at the Child in Transition-Homeless program! Kim Rector at CIT/H was instrumental in keeping a student at our school throughout the four year period that she and her family were homeless. Kim's help meant that our student had our school as a stable environment during a difficult time. This student has flourished and is now in sixth grade; ready to make the big jump to middle school.

Quyana to Mr. Michael Mrugala at Mirror Lake Middle School! Thank you, Mr. Mrugala for making math my favorite class ever. You make it fun and whenever I do something wrong you explain how to do it right. You inspire me to do my very best and I will miss you next year!
- Quinn Bailey, student
Quyana to Homestead Elementary staff! A huge quyana to staff at Homestead for their patience, compassion, creativity and professionalism. Our son's disabilities make the sustained instructional program of primary school very challenging to him. His struggles have consequently challenged Homestead staff in fulfilling their charge of offering a fair and effective instructional experience for him. From Principal Barbara Nagangast to noon-duty staffers, and especially his teachers and the Special Education contingent headed by Dayna Pandres, the staff at Homestead have offered caring, flexible, coordinated and effective instruction and support for our son.
The creativity and resilience provided at Homestead far exceeds what we expected. In fact, their patience and dedication are more akin to a parent's than a service provider's. Homestead staff have been successful at not only engaging our son's capable but challenging potential, but also in doing so while leaving him feeling a valued and typical kid. This pretty much sums up the Homestead experience for us, where the typical experience is one of high value. Thank you Principal Nagangast and Homestead staff.
- Clinton Holloway, parent
Quyana to second- and third-grade teachers and specialists at Polaris K-12! This month's "AMP Event about Plants" by students in second and third grade was spectacular! From introductory facts about planting seeds, to a creative explanation about how plants get energy for growing, to the importance of pollination. The AMP event portrayed real life during springtime in Alaska! When teaching truly cross-pollinates subject area disciplines, enthusiasm blooms and lasting learning for children flourishes.
The students memorized principles of science, a piece of music, created artistic props, sang songs and participated in fitness games. and all along the way, we could just feel their enthusiasm! It was like an art exhibit, music concert, fitness games and science unit lessons all in one.
Kudos to the phenomenal art, music and physical education specialists (Kelly Hebert, Kathy Mobley and Melissa Lamebull-Ingram) and awesome second- and third-grade teaching team (Corey Aist, Jenna Baldiviez and Judy Waldron) at Polaris K-12 for the success of this spectacular celebration. You have dedicated yourselves to the planning and collaboration needed in order for all students to be creative, engage actively and achieve in demonstrating content learning.
We thank you for exemplary efforts to ensure student access to collaborative and relevant learning opportunities. You make a positive difference!
- Jesus and Colleen Castaneda, parents

Randy Cheadle, Dave Roe, Angela Cabalbal, and Misi Situfu YOU GUYS ROCK! I know it is not always easy but you guys have been amazing to work with. Your attitudes, willingness to learn and work together for what is best for students has made my job so much easier! A thank you is not enough but is necessary nonetheless. Thank you!
- Destiny Hornstein, teacher
Quyana to English Language Learners Department at Clark Middle School! On behalf of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, Alaska Alumnae Chapter, I would like to recognize the ELL Department at Clark Middle School. The department consists of Marissa Smith, Arlene Chico, Maureen Wmscornilius, Olena Novitska, Al Grubbs, and the tutors: Chao Kue, Ina Carpenter, Louise Carpio and Jack Tuia. - Yvonne Charles, community member
Quyana to Philip Stephens at Clark Middle School! On behalf of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, Alaska Alumnae Chapter, I would like to recognize Phil Stephens for his ability to employ outside activities as a learning tool. He uses his lunch break to teach sixth-graders how to play and perfect the game of chess. The game allows these students to establish a strategy, implement the planned strategy and think on their feet when the strategy has to change. His efforts were highlighted when one of the members of his team won second place at the Rogers Park chess tournament. Outstanding job!
- Yvonne Charles, community member
Quyana to Joe Macon at Mount Iliamna School! Joe is our building BPO. On a daily basis he goes above and beyond the call of duty and helps out with any and everything around Mt. I. he knows all the kids’ names and is always available to assist them. His support of our program and our students is not something I can put into words.
He also keeps our building in tip top shape and helps us with whatever we might need from a new table to something off the wall. He often does all of this while smiling and singing in the halls. He makes our hallways much brighter with his spirit! Thanks Joe!
- Destiny Hornstein, classroom teacher
Quyana to Ora Amos at Begich Middle School! I would like to thank Ora Amos for always having a great attitude, sharing her smiles and always going out of her way to help me. Recently Ora knew that I was trying to accomplish more than I could handle alone and she immediately jumped in and made my job not only easier, but possible. Thank you, Ora! It is a pleasure to work with you for the benefit of our students.
- Sylvia Biondich, colleague
Quyana to Jessica Limbird at Airport Heights Elementary! Jessica Limbird is a dedicated Youth Development Tutor at Airport Heights Elementary. I wanted to thank Jessica, not only for her hard work in helping students achieve academic success, but for her vision, effort and commitment to bridging the cultural gap in our school.
Last evening, we had a showcase at our school that included our own Native Dance Group and a performance by third- to sixth-grade students led by artist in residence Steve Blanchett -- all organized and delivered through the efforts of Jessica. The positive spirit, community participation, student achievement and delight of all who participated represent the best of what Airport Heights Elementary and the Anchorage School District have to offer our community.
Jessica Limbird is a positive agent of change in the community and the people of Airport Heights are extremely fortunate to have her in our midst.
Thank you Jessica for all that you do.
Quyana!
- Michael Webb, principal
Quyana to Linnet Moser at Airport Heights! Linnet Moser is a dedicated and tireless educator who has continuously gone above and beyond in efforts to help the students and staff at Airport Heights Elementary achieve success in life.
Linnet is instrumental in all facets of the school. She collaborates with teachers to provide the best instructional practices, she works with students to develop academic and Social Emotional Learning skills. Her leadership and keen insight help to guide our school improvement planning and her attention to detail helps keep us on task and moving in the right direction. Ms. Moser models what it is to be a good, kind, and dedicated citizen.
No words can express the gratitude I have for Linnet's efforts, but I can say that I am "stoked" to work with her.
Thank you Ms. Moser for making Airport Heights Elementary, and the Anchorage School District a great place for kids to learn and grow and for preparing our student for "Success in Life."
Quyana!
- Michael Webb, principal
Quyana to Todd Bryant and Wendell Thomas at Maintenance! Both have done such a great job working with us at Chinook! We had some pretty specific requests and they were both willing to not only work with us, but gave us suggestions of how to make our ideas better. Thanks so much for working with us in displaying all of our quilts, our staff photos and so much more. Your work -- both this year and last -- is greatly appreciated and admired daily. Thanks for making a difference!

- Melissa Casey, teacher
Quyana to Lynette Harple, choral director at West High School! Thank you Ms. Harple for everything. I never get the chance to tell you this at school so here I go. You came out of retirement for us.
You were an amazing teacher to the West High School choir. We know that West had some trouble with what happened during the school year, and you got us through it all. We will miss you next year in choir and hope to see you at our concerts. I have had so much fun working with you this year and sadly this would be my last. Thank you so much again, we love you Ms. Harple.
- Cherry Vinoya, student

Quyana to Susan Heyroth at Willow Crest Elementary! Thank you for "adopting" our fourth-grade class during testing and to all of Willow Crest's primary teachers for "adopting" intermediate classes. Susan and her class did something every day of testing to make our class feel special and supported. It worked! Thank you, Susan and Willow Crest Staff!
- Lindsey Fees, teacher
Quyana to ASD auditorium technicians Tammie Smith-Scott and John Turner! Tammie and John did a wonderful job of setting up the high school large group festival held on March 23. They had a huge job to set up choral risers, choir shell, many chairs, a grand piano and microphones. In addition to this set up, they also had to move many pieces of equipment during the concert itself. They worked very professionally and accomplished these tasks in a very timely manner.
They set up the stage early in the day so my West choir students could have a dress rehearsal in the space before our concert.
My deepest thanks go to Tammie and John and to all of the other auditorium techs who do the "unseen" work to keep our auditoriums running smoothly for all who need to use them.
Thanks for a job well done!
- Lynette Harple, choir ceacher at West High School
