Introductions to our coaches and staff

Danielle Clay
Football Cheer/Dance Coach

I am excited to be joining the coaching staff, as well as the teaching staff, at ERHS. This will be my first year coaching cheer/dance in the ASD. I coached cheerleading for 2 years at a private school on the east coast, but I am a dancer at heart. I started dancing at Alaska Dance Theatre at the age of six. I continued studying ballet, jazz and modern dance as a company member until I graduated from high school. I have also performed and choreographed for community shows like the Sorcerer's Apprentice and The Music Machine. I am looking forward to combining my dance background with the skills of my future cheerleaders and dancers.

Joe Dinwiddie
Wrestling Coach

I am a lifelong Alaskan and have been involved in wrestling since junior high and throughout high school. I began coaching wrestling in 92-93 at Palmer High School. As an assistant coach at Palmer High school, our team finished second at State. Most recently I have been involved with the wrestling program at Mears Middle School (03-05). I am very anxious to be part of the longstanding wrestling tradition in Eagle River.

I work as a Construction Manager for a construction firm in Anchorage and have been very active in coaching many of the boys that played for Chugiak High School outside of the high school season from 1996-2002.

Rob Hulse
Girls ’ Hockey
I grew up in Eagle River and graduated from Chugiak High School in 1975. I played hockey under Coach Harry McDonald from 1969-75. During college at Pacific Lutheran University, I began coaching hockey for the local association. My wife and I were married our senior year of college concluding a five year courtship which began as juniors at CHS. Returning to Eagle River we began teaching for ASD and I coached hockey at CHS. My coaching ended briefly during the early 90’s when my wife informed me we had two daughters and there was life with out hockey. By the mid 90’s my daughters were playing and I had returned to coaching. Since 1996 I have been coaching for the Alaska Firebirds Hockey Association. Twice I have taken Firebird teams all the way to the USA Hockey National Tournament. At the 2004 Arctic Winter Games I coached the Alaska Jr. Women’s team, bringing home the Bronze Medal and will coach the 06’ team. I have been coaching now for almost 28 years and still dearly love the game. I am looking forward to building a strong program here at Eagle River High School.

After we got married, we moved directly to Alaska where I finished college and played for UAA Hockey in 79-80. I also started coaching that year for AHA. I coached a Bantam "B" team for two years. I was hired to coach at Bartlett where I was JV coach and asst. varsity coach for four years, then head coach for one year. I coached for the Arctic winter games 84,86, and 90. I have two sons. When they got involved in playing hockey, I coached one or the other, or both throughout the 90's. In 88, I coached the Mustang Bantam B's to a state championship. I coached with Troy Coulson for a number of years, one of which we had an undefeated Pee Wee team until the crossovers at state. Then I coached with Dean Treboyovich at the Bantam level. I have been the head coach for the new U-16 for the last 2 yrs. Throughout this time, I continue to play on various Senior League teams. I continue to play because I love the game and it is great exercise.

Mark VanArsdale
Swimming and Diving Coach
I have been the head swimming and diving coach of the Chugiak High Swim Team for 1 year, and assistant at Chugiak for four years previous to that. During this time I was privileged to coach multiple state champions and school record holders, two All American's, and one current state record holder. In my own swimming, I swam all four strokes and the IM. I was a high school record holder and collegiate All American (Div III).

I will bring to the Eagle River High’s Swim Team a coaching philosophy that emphasizes balance and high standards in student’s academic, personal, and athletic lives. I believe in creating an athletic experience in which challenges are fun, and personal betterment, not necessarily winning, is the ideal for success.
