East High School
East High School was built in 1960 with major additions in 1972 and
is now a building of approximately 236,000 square feet.
In 1998 the Anchorage School District adopted High School
Educational Specifications (Ed Specs) establishing modern standards for its
high school designs. An extensive plan of renovations to the existing structure
has been made that will help deliver the educational programs the District
plans for the 21st century.
Funding for this design effort was available from the remainder of
bonds approved by the voters in April 1997 for similar renewals at Chugiak,
Dimond, and Service High Schools. Detailed design and construction phases of
the plan are to be funded in phases over several years.
Some of the issues addressed in the renewal plan may be capacity,
program, code compliance, and physical condition of the facility.

April 2001
Proposition 12 on the April 2001 ballot included
our most critical needs. Those needs didn't go away once the votes
were counted. The district will continue to
do everything they can to improve our aging
crowded facilities because all students deserve to be in an environment
that is conducive to learning. Below
is a description of what was on the bond
for this school. Proposition 12
failed.
-
Phases II and III: Constructs an academic area for 400 students, creates a new
600-seat auditorium and upgrades classrooms for performing arts, life skills
and home economics. The project also includes a new location for the library, a
new student entrance and parking lot upgrades.
-
Upgrade of electrical systems to support computer technology and
improve interior and exterior lighting.
-
Mechanical systems improvement. Upgrades to areas such as
restrooms, boilers, heating and ventilation systems. Proposition 12 failed.
April 2000
In Phase I, a core academic house will be created
as well as a new commons area, which can be
used as a cafeteria. A new main entry will
be established at the west end of the building.
Site work will increase parking and improve
access to the school. Proposition
13 passed.
