School name:

On November 13, 2006 the Anchorage School Board chose Nicholas J. Begich Middle School to be the name for the new Muldoon area middle school. Learn more: Biography | ADN article

After visiting all seven feeders schools and counting nearly 800 ballots, the official mascot has been voted the SNOW LEOPARD and our colors are BLACK AND SILVER! Thanks to all who helped participate in the democratic process! Current middle schools' colors & mascots.

School principal:

Jeanne FischerJeanne Fischer has been selected as the new principal. Ms. Fischer was formerly the principal at Mirror Lake Middle School.

Building size:

Approximately 174,000 sq. ft., consisting of 40 core academic spaces arranged in four “houses” to provide a home base for smaller groups of students.

Location:

Begich Middle School is located on a 30.5 acre site south of DeBarr Road and west of Muldoon Road. Chester Creek flows along the south side of the property offering habitat and stream study opportunities. The street address is 7440 Creekside Center Drive, Anchorage, Alaska 99504.

Academic Program:

The school will offer an academic program based on the middle school concept which uses a team approach. It will house sixth-grade through eighth grade students. This will be ASD’s second 6-7-8 middle school; the first was Mirror Lake Middle School.

Student capacity:

1,058 students. School will relieve long-standing overcrowding at three middle schools and will house sixth graders from five elementary schools.

Sports:

Begich Middle School has an indoor track, outdoor track, hockey rink, baseball field, tennis courts and a multi-use turf field.

Construction of the Nicholas J. Begich Middle School - August 2006

Facility features:

Construction on the Muldoon area middle school

Construction:

Design discussions began in March 2003. The school’s groundbreaking ceremony was held April 29, 2005. Building construction was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.

Architect:

Kumin Associates, Inc. Previous ASD project experience includes Bartlett High School renewal, Goldenview Middle School and Denali Elementary School. Read about the design process here »

General Contractor/Construction Manager:

Roger Hickel Contracting, Inc. Previous ASD project experience includes East High School interior renovations.

Construction cost:

$52 million for construction was approved by voters in 2004. Sixty percent of construction costs are being paid by the state of Alaska through the school debt reimbursement program.

Background information:

  This is a unique project involving both Municipal and School District facilities on one site. Located on DeBarr near Muldoon Road, the 30.49 acre site was acquired by the Municipality in January 2003 through state and local funding. Learn more »
