¡Hola! I'm Debra Abshier, Spanish teacher at Begich Middle School. I'm moving to Anchorage from Houston, TX just to be a part of the Begich team. I'll be bringing my husband George, and my two Welsh Corgi dogs, Griff and Lilly. I've been studying Spanish since TVs were black & white and ball point pens hadn't been invented yet and I can't wait to share my love of all things Spanish with the students of Begich!
Foreign language classes should be fun, interactive and totally different from any other class in a student's schedule. In my class you'll learn to speak, understand, read and write Spanish, but that's not all. An important part of learning a language is learning about the culture of the people who speak it. Spanish class offers the opportunity to answer questions such as, "Where did bullfighting come from?" and "Who would eat a guinea pig?" Oh, yes - you'll also be able to order lunch and find the bathroom in 23 countries around the world!
When I'm not teaching Spanish, I spend my time playing the flute and Irish tinwhistle, cooking foods from around the world, and enjoying the great outdoors with my husband. George and I are looking forward to purchasing our very own kayak, snowshoes, skis, snowmobile, and all the other cool Alaskan stuff. I am certain that I will be learning as much about Alaska from my students as they will be learning about Spanish from me. I can't wait to get started! ¡Hasta luego!
