Maureen Cronin-Wmscornelius

Maureen Cronin-WmscorneliusI am excited to be a part of the inaugural year of Begich Middle School.  My name is Maureen Cronin-Wmscornelius, M.A., I teach English as a Second Language. An intriguing aspect of our school district is that it's among the most linguistically diverse in the nation.  Over eighty languages are spoken representing a cross-spectrum of cultures. Culturally responsive teaching practices align with my philosophy of education. Education has a significant role within society in shaping attitudes, developing understanding and opposing bias. As a teacher in a multicultural society, I hold an attitude of respect for cultural differences and recognize the cultural resources my students bring to class, tapping students' cultural resources in the teaching-learning process. While these attributes have always been needed, culturally responsive teaching is a powerful tool in advancing the goals of No Child Left Behind. Cultural literacy extends beyond merely recognizing that cultures exist. What is good and sensitive practice with all students, in other words, is especially important when the teacher comes from a different background than the students. All teachers -- inexperienced and experienced – benefit from having a deeper understanding of students home cultures.

I look forward to connecting with the faculty, students and families of the Begich Middle School community.
