Jeanne Fischer

Jeanne FischerWelcome to Nicholas J. Begich Middle School!  As the principal of your new school, I am looking forward to working with you during your student’s middle school years.  I am excited about working this year with all the children and families from our attendance area to build and unite our school community.

My husband and I have been residents of Alaska since 1972, having memorable experiences living in Juneau, Kodiak and Anchorage.  I am originally from Chicago, Illinois, and attended Chicago public schools before taking a degree at the University of Illinois.  There I got my first master’s degree in social work.  My second is in education and counseling from the University of Alaska.  Having the experience of working with families in foster care and in boarding schools while employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Jesse Lee Home also has been a critical part of my training.

I began my career in education as a teacher at Kodiak High School.  Later, I served at East Anchorage High School for fourteen years as teacher, counselor, and Assistant Principal.  My first opportunity to serve as a principal came with the opening of Mirror Lake Middle School, and it proved a wonderfully challenging and rewarding nine year adventure to open a new sixth through eighth grade middle school, the first in Anchorage.  I am even more thrilled to be able to open and devote myself to the success of every student in the Nicholas J. Begich Middle School.  It gives me significant satisfaction to meet and work with this greatly involved community to develop programs to educate, support, and guide our young students.

I love reading, learning, and working.   I also am a traveler, a bicycler, and a hiker who thoroughly enjoys living in Alaska.
