 My name is Sean Murphy. I am a father of two teenage daughters, and a husband of a wonderful woman, who is also an art teacher in the school district. I have taught for 11 years at several different schools here in Anchorage.
Teaching has been a passion of mine since I was a student myself. I have heard a saying that fits…"there are two reasons people become teachers, one is because they were inspired by great teachers and want to be one, the other is they had poor teachers and they want to make education better." Unfortunately I am of the later crowd. As a result I have a strong commitment to make my student's education better than the one I had in school. During my high school experience, I sat through many classes telling myself I could do a better job if I were a teacher.
I took a different route to becoming a teacher. After high school, I worked construction for a year, and then joined the military. I was in the Army for four years, and that is what brought me to Alaska. I got married and we had our two daughters. As they grew, I remembered my vow to make education better. As a stay at home dad, I earned my teaching degree in night school. This experience has taught me a great deal about commitment, perseverance and life-long learning, that I incorporate into to my classroom. In my opinion, my diverse life experiences help me be a better teacher. I have worked with various organizations in the community of Anchorage (Campfire, Covenant House, as well as the Anchorage School District.) I am a strong believer in the idea that it takes a village to raise a child. As a teacher, I know it is my duty to get to know my students and attempt to meet all of their needs. I am excited to be a part of a new school, community and team. I eagerly offer my service to make this a successful place for all our children.
