21st Century Schools as Center of Community
The Master Plan Concept layout offers small learning communities and flexible solutions to fit various school organization models. West High will be converted to a three-story structure with community-shared spaces on the first floor and more secured regular academic classrooms on the second and third floors. The more compact three-story structure offers increased land for a small site. This land will be used to improve vehicular site access, separate bus and vehicular traffic, improve internal site circulation and increase parking.
Additions to Romig Middle School allow the academic classrooms to be grouped into teams around a shared small group learning area. Three team areas are developed on the first floor and four teams areas are developed on the second floor.
The Master Plan Concept reflects West-Romig Learning Plan features, including a vibrant commons at the heart of each school, giving each a strong sense of identity. These commons will offer students and the community a multi-functional space for active community participation in the education of students through mentorships, advocacy and facilitated personalized learning.
Athletic fields include a new 10-lane outdoor track to be shared between the high school and the middle school. Football/soccer fields of artificial, engineered turf are planned for both West High and Romig Middle Schools.
Site / Traffic
USKH traffic engineers, a member of Fanning Howey’s design team, worked closely with the Alaska Department of Transportation, the Municipality of Anchorage and key stakeholders in reviewing a number of concepts to improve access to the West-Romig campus. They explored and evaluated various strategies. These concepts and strategies are summarized in a white paper Traffic report. See the traffic report (PDF).
