A sincere thank you
A sincere thank you from the Anchorage School District goes to the voters who understood the need and supported the rebuilding of Clark Middle School in the April 2007 municipal election. This community came together so that a state-of-the art facility, equal to our other middle schools, will be provided to the students and families in Mountain View. A new school building is critical to Clark’s continued academic progress and its role as a community center.
Such an outcome would not have been possible without the hard work of people like Kitté Miller and Mary Rasmussen, who led the School Bonds Yes!
Campaign, with support from Suzanne Little, and the Anchorage Community Land Trust. We also commend Mayor Mark Begich, the Anchorage Assembly, the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association and the city’s community councils for their efforts to pass the school bonds. The district is grateful to the Anchorage legislative caucus as well, for standing behind the propositions and appropriating funds to the state debt reimbursement program, which is crucial to ensuring our students attend safe, quality schools.
The voters have spoken and now the hard work begins. Demolition begins in earnest in June 2007 and the new school will open by
August 2009. During construction, Clark’s
current 7th graders and incoming 5th and 6th graders will attend Begich, Central, Romig and Wendler middle schools, and will become a part of those schools’ communities.
This was a good time to invest in our schools. The state agreed to pay more than 60 percent of the combined costs of Clark’s new building and the school renewal projects scheduled for 40 of our facilities. Of the total $85 million in estimated costs, local taxpayers will pay $35 million. As a property owner myself, I understand the burden of increased property taxes, and the need for accountability of public funding. The district will be good stewards of taxpayer monies and responsible reporting of expenditures.
If anyone would like more information on the projects or would like to offer comments, my door and email basket are always open.
