Nicholas J. Begich Middle SchoolGeneral background informationReturn to Nicholas J. Begich Middle School home This is a unique project involving both Municipal and School District facilities on one site. Located on DeBarr near Muldoon Road, the 30.49 acre site was acquired by the Municipality in January 2003 through state and local funding. The site is being master planned to accommodate a middle school and a potential community center and municipal library. A Planning and Space Needs study for the Municipality's facilities was completed in late February 2003. The District's Middle School Educational Specifications (1.7 Mb PDF) reflect the school's program. In March 2003, discussions between the School District and Municipality, regarding design and construction funding, began. At the same time, the District worked closely with Kumin Associates to complete formation of design team members, negotiate a professional services agreement, identify community participants, and gather current site information. A conceptual design for the new Nicholas J. Begich Middle School has been developed to serve 1,058 students. Design funding was authorized by 1999 General Obligation Bonds. Kumin Associates, Inc. was selected and approved by the School Board and Municipal Assembly in March 2003 to lead the design effort. An advisory Building Design Committee, including community members, was assembled to assist in the design. Municipal voters approved school bond funding for the project in November 2004. Construction, which started in April 2005, will take about two years; the new school will open in August 2007.
