Jason Collins

Jason CollinsDo you want to know about the oldest student at Nicholas Begich Middle School? He can often be found playing hacky sack at lunch and building robots out of LEGOs after school. If you see him on the soccer field, he likes to play defense, or if he’s found at Alyeska, you'll spy him riding a snowboard down the North Face or Max’s Traverse. If you are lucky enough to see him in a classroom, you'll realize he’s not sitting at a desk. He will be wandering around checking out the rest of the students. He might be measuring the length of his foot, or you might see him making a pie chart with the rest of the kids. If he shouts “Biz,” you know that he’s still in the game. In reality, he is not a child. He is 32 years old and he’s the new math teacher. He is me. I am Jason Collins. I consider myself a student, because I learn as much from the real students as they do from me. I have been teaching for over 8 years in the Anchorage School District. I graduated from Steller Secondary School and earned my Bachelor’s of Education from UAA. I have been married for 9 years and have 2 children. They are ages 8 and 6. So what is the mean of their ages and percent of my life I've been married? Don’t know? Come ask me, and I'll show you how to figure it out.
