“Great spirits have always encountered opposition from mediocre minds" –Einstein
Seven years ago when I started teaching, this saying hung on the wall under a picture of Albert Einstein. This saying, although on a new poster, still has a place in my class. This saying is especially fitting for the middle school students in my classroom and my own views on teaching. I started my teaching career in a 100° classroom in Spokane, Washington, my hometown. The students were “at-risk” and I was the reading teacher. After nine weeks, I wanted to be a “real” teacher. I eventually joined a Masters program and interned for two years in Draper, Utah, teaching middle school Math and Science. I had found my calling. After three years in Utah, my husband Gino and I made the big move to Alaska. We packed everything we owned in our two cars, left all furniture behind and drove up the Alaska Highway. I quickly found a job with the Anchorage School District and have been happily working here for four years. Every time I travel outside of Alaska, the feeling of longing reminds me that I have found my real home here in the North.
