Hello and welcome to our new school Web site! My name is Laura Ownby and I have the good fortune of becoming your school nurse. School nursing has been the focus of my nursing career for nine years now and I have been working at a middle school for seven of those years. I have also worked at Charter North Hospital (known as North Star) and Alaska Regional Hospital, but I love school nursing the best.
The middle school age group is very fun to work with because it is a time of great personal changes. Change is exciting, but also challenging and brings with it many questions and opportunities to teach. It just so happens that I love to teach and to talk about health. It is my hope that when everything is changing, the students of Begich Middle School and their parents can feel comfortable coming to the Health Office to discuss their health issues and those issues that concern the community. This gives me the opportunity to teach. Even if I don’t know the answer, your presence is an invitation to talk about health and we can find the answer together.
Outside of school I am a family member with a husband and 4 grownup kids. I also know how to sew, ride a bike, fish and snowshoe. And…I have a wonderful garden that I love and that changes every year. Feel free to stop and see your nurse anytime. -Laura Ownby RN NCSN |
