My background has shaped my teaching experience immensely. Raised in a small town in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, community and spending time in the outdoors were integral to my upbringing. I attended college at the University of Colorado at Boulder, gaining a bachelor’s degree in Geography and Sociology while participating in the AmeriCorps program. Upon graduation, I discovered my love of teaching in a variety of settings: teaching a third grade bilingual class in Colombia, South America; at a children’s ski school in Colorado; on a college field program, studying the uses of the Colorado River; and as a guide on tours throughout Alaska and the Yukon Territory. With my love of teaching realized, I headed to Western Washington University and received a secondary social studies teaching credential and a Master’s of Education. My husband and I settled in Anchorage, where I have been teaching at the middle-school level since 2002. Here, I enjoy time reading, writing, hiking, hanging out with my two dogs, and- best of all- raising my newborn daughter.
