The School Building Design Committee

Pathway to a school. Click for a text version.

Annually the District updates the Six-Year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). The CIP includes school project recommendations to meet educational and facility program needs. These projects include renewal, code upgrades and facility audit corrections. The CIP also identifies the need for new schools and housing alternatives.

Roles of School Building Design Committee Members

Design Committee

School communities play an important role in the design of new or renovated school facilities. Upon project approval, the School Building Design Committee forms to begin the project design phase.

School Building Design Committees help the District develop facilities with the necessary size and features to accommodate educational programs and community use. Building Design Committees are advisory to the School District Administration and School Board.  Their recommendations offer important local perspectives on issues.

Design Committee members include the school principal, teachers, PTA representatives, community members, architect and District project manager.

Time Commitment

The amount of time the design committee will spend varies depending on the specific project. The greatest time commitment is at the beginning of the design phase. The design phase can extend over several months and could entail frequent meetings with the District project manager and architect. Upon completion of the design phase, the school principal will keep committee members up-to-date on construction progress.
