Minority Education Concerns Advisory Committee

The Minority Education Concerns Advisory Committee (MECAC) is the only standing committee that is appointed by the Anchorage School Board.  Their role is to advise the Board on issues relating to minority students and their families.  The MECAC works to ensure equity for all students and provides input to the School Board on such issues as educational programs, curriculum and course content, student discipline, citizen involvement, and minority community concerns. The current president of MECAC is Damito Owen. There are three standing subcommittees: Discipline, Curriculum and Outreach.

MECAC will meet for two hours once a month (except June and July), the second Thursday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the ASD Education Center in room #150.  They will alternate between business meetings and informational meetings.

Guidelines for the MECAC mandate the committee should consist of nine to eleven community members who represent the diverse minority student population. At least one member is appointed from within each high school attendance area and all others are appointed at-large. None of the members may be currently enrolled in public school or employed by the School District either full or part time. The rest of the guidelines for the committee can be viewed on the Committee Guidelines page.
