Kinder-Garden News

Kindergarten is, you know, a garden where the children grow.

Welcome to Mrs. Johnson's Kindergarten Class at Bayshore Elementary in Anchorage, Alaska!

This year, there are 22 children in our class. Mrs. Johnson is our teacher and Mrs. Bennett is our teacher assistant. We also have two birds, a salamander named Sal, an axolotl named Star, a red-eared slider turtle named George, and a cage full of stick bugs.

This has been a busy year in our classroom!

Our main themes so far have included classic tales, bats, fire and earthquake safety, the Wampanoag Indians, Pilgrims, reindeer, and earth science (volcanoes, earthquakes, glaciers, and rocks). During the month of March we will be learning about The Iditarod Dog Sled Race and Alaska. We use these major themes to study language arts, math, science, social studies, and health. Click here for a picture of our class at the beginning of the year. In these pictures we are holding gingerbread kids that we baked and decorated after reading several versions of The Gingerbread Man during our unit on classic tales.

This year in math we have learned about patterns, classifying and sorting,
counting and writing to 100 (and beyond), estimating, graphing, and building and writing equations for sums up to 10. We have also started to learn about fractions, money, and telling time.

During our language arts block we enjoy reading stories, journal writing, poetry, interactive writing, writing Weekly News, labeling pictures, and D.E.A.R. The students take home a "baggie book" each evening to read with their families, and many students are now sharing those stories with the class. It's exciting to see the wonderful readers and writers in our room blossom!

Samantha, Rosy, and Ben enjoy looking at rock samples.

 Isaac, Courtney,
and Roxie are future geologists!

We had a geologist visit us during our earth science unit.

After reading The Gingerbread Man we made gingerbread kids. The gingerbread kids ran away while we were out of the room.

We finally found them hiding in Mr. Gidding's office!
