Valerie Oliver - Librarian , Bayshore Elementary

Welcome to the Bayshore Library! Our library collection contains over 16,000 items that exist to support the recreational and academic needs of our 517 students, 21 classroom teachers, and 11 support staff.

Reading to your child, reading with your child, and listening to your child read are the most important things that you can do to help your child in becoming a literate individual. Additionally, you can serve as a supportive role model by reading in the home yourself and encouraging reading!

Bayshore library is currently promoting two reading programs. They are: ACCELERATED READER, a computerized reading program, and BATTLE OF THE BOOKS, a state-wide team reading competition for grades 3-6.

  • What is it?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is actually the registered trademark name for a national reading program. This program is computerized reading management. On our school's file server we have computerized tests on over 1,300 books in our collection. Each AR book is marked with its reading level and a point value. Students reading AR books may test after reading the book. AR tests give feedback with respect to reading comprehension and suggested reading level for future materials. The computerized program also awards points for each book successfully tested, so students are earning points for reading incentives!
  • Who will participate?
All students in grades 1-6 have been entered into the computer and are able to log on for AR testing. Non-reading students in grades 1 & 2 may be read to, and testing can be donewith a parent volunteer. Currently we have lisence to house 500 students on our file server as test takers.
  • Where can students test?
Because this program and bank of tests lives on our file server, any computer in our school which is hooked up to our school network can be used as a test station. Most students will be testing in their classroom. Most tests take under 5 minutes to complete.
  • When can students test?
Any day of the week that they are in school, a computer is available, and they have the permission of their teacher.
  • How will parents know what teachers and students are learning via these tests?
Accelerated Reader has the ability to print out a report of each test taken, praising the student's success.
  • BATTLE OF THE BOOKS, mentioned above, is a state-wide reading competition. There is a set of 14 book titles for 3rd and 4th graders and another set of 15book titles for 5th and 6th graders. Participating students will read the titles for their grade level and will, in teams of 3 or 4, compete with other teams to see who can best answer "In what book..........." by giving title and author. It is a lot of fun, introduces students to good authors, and promotes teamwork. Reading lists for this years battle can be found in the Bayshore Library. LOVE IT!Thank you BP Exploration!
