Ada Shavings

My name is Ada Kopanuk Shavings and I grew up all over Alaska since my dad was a pastor. We settled down in Bethel and when I was in the 5th grade I moved to Mountain Village and stayed with my grandparents until my parents moved there a year later.

I graduated from Covenant High School in Unalakleet Alaska in 1983. After graduation I worked at various jobs including Head cook at the village cannery, village store bookkeeper, receptionist and at the Suicide Hot Line for the Tundra Women's Coalition in Bethel which serves 56 villages. After 2 1/2 years, I moved to Anchorage and helped organize the food bank for Alaska Housing Finance Corporation. I also organized the Gottchalks Store's business department after they bought out Lamonts and they still use the same system I set up for them. I worked at Alaska Native Heritage Center when they first opened and then worked for NANA corporation off and on doing housekeeping. In April of 2004 I went back to work for the Alaska Native Heritage Center where I am still employed as special events support.

I have 5 children: Anna my oldest lives in Bethel, Phillip is 18 and in the United States Marines, Jolene is 17 and lives in Hooper Bay , Arnette, 6, and Nan, 5, live here in Anchorage and are attending the Alaska Native Culture Charter School.
