    11/18/08                        TOYOTA COMMUNITY SCHOLARS:  (Seniors)  Awards 100 renewable scholarships valued at $10,00 or $20,000 payable over four years to outstanding  high school seniors.  Recipients are recognized for excellence in academics and for making meaningful service contribution to their school and their community.  Applicant must be a high school senior.  The Toyota Community Scholars Program are seeking a candidate who has an outstanding academic record, is an effective leader and has a well-documented record of service both within and outside the school setting.  Bartlett can only identify one student from the senior class to participation in this year’s competition.  Applications must be received in the CRC no later than Tuesday, November 18, 2008.

     

    11/20/08                        NESTLE VERY BEST IN YOUTH:  Young people chosen will be featured in a special book and will receive a number of prizes including an all-expense paid trip for them and a parent to the awards ceremony in Hollywood, California.  The young people will also receive $1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice.  The program is open to young people 13-18 years old who excel in both school and community; the program recognizes and supports responsible citizenship on the part of America’s youth; application and information available at www.nestle-verybestinyouth or call 818-549-6677.

    11/21/08                        THE ART INSTITUTES PASSION FOR FASHION COMPETITION:  (Seniors)  The Passion for Fashion Competition challenges teens to create their own original design, fashion marketing, merchandising, or retail management plan.  Grand prize winners will receive a full-tuition scholarship to The Art Institute at which they enter the competition, a trip to New York’s Fashion Week, and a “meet and greet” at Seventeen Magazine.  More than $100,000 in tuition scholarships to the Art Institute will be awarded.  Deadline for entries:  November 21, 2008.  www.artinstitutes.edu/passionforfashion

    11/28/08                        WOMEN IN AVIATION INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  Each applicant must be a Women in Aviation International member and may apply for no more than two scholarships.  Applicant must provide a 500-word essay to include:  your aviation history and goals, what you have done for yourself to achieve your goals, where you see yourself in five and 10 years, ete.     12/01/08                        2009 SAE ENGINEERING UNDESIGNATED SCHOLARSHIPS:  (Seniors)  These corporate-sponsored scholarships range in value from $1,000 to $10,000.  To qualify,  applicant must enroll in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology at a university of the applicant’s choice.  Undesignated scholarships are paid directly to the college or university.  Scholarships are contingent upon the applicant’s enrollment in engineering and acceptance from their chosen college or university.  Applicant must intend to earn a degree in engineering or a related science and meet minimum requirements with regard to grade point average, SAT 1 and/or ACT scores as outlined in the individual requirements of each scholarship.  Apply on-line www.sae.org/students/engschlr.htm    Application must be postmarked by December 1, 2008.

    12/01/08                        2009 SAE UNIVERSITY SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIPS:  (Seniors)   These scholarships are sponsored by participating universities and colleges, and range in value from $400 to full tuition.  To qualify, the applicant must attend the named university and enroll in a specific program of engineering, if required.  These scholarships are not transferable to another university.  Judging will be conducted by the specific university, and will be based on the criteria established by the university and as outlined in the individual scholarship descriptions.  All sponsored scholarships are contingent upon the applicant’s enrollment in an accredited curriculum.   Applicant is responsible for making application for admission to the college or university.  If application to the school is not made prior to January 15, 2009, the applicant will be disqualified.  Apply on-line by December 1, 2008.  www.sae.org/students/engschlr.htm

    12/01/08                        HMONG NATIONAL DEVELOP, INC. EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  Hmong National Development, Inc., funds its Educational Scholarship Program through fundraising activities and community donations to offer one-time scholarships to selected Hmong students who are enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university during the 2009-2010 school year.  In order to be eligible, applicants must be a Hmong student with residency in the United States, provide one (1) page about the student’s employment history, involvement in community and extracurricular  activities and honors received and a personal essay.  A complete application package must be postmarked by no later than December 1, 2008.  www.hndinc.org

     

    12/01/08                        THE VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD:  (Young women, currently between the ages of 14 and 17).  The Violet Richardson Award, Honoring Young Women for volunteer action, a program of Soroptimist International of the Americas.  This award program begins at the local Soroptimist club level, where the type of award varies.  Club-level winners then become eligible for one of 28 $1,000 awards.  In addition, $1,000 will be contributed in honor of these winners to their volunteer organizations.  One finalist will be chosen from among the 28 winners for an additional award.  Write an essay, up to 750 words, tell where you volunteer and why.  Describe the goals of the organization and its impact on the problem(s) it addresses.  What is your role in the organization?  What have you accomplished as a volunteer?   Application must be received by December 1, 2008.

    12/12/08                        FORREST JONES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  The Alaska Air Carriers Association (AACA) is a sponsor of the Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarship.  The amount to be awarded each year will be determined by the Scholarship Committee.  A student pursuing a 4-year college degree in Aviation Technology, or applying to attend a flight school program or a certified A & P program may apply.  The deadline to apply is December 12, 2008.    www.alaskaaircarriers.org

    12/12/08                        ALASKA RAILROAD TOUR GUIDE TRAINING PROGRAM:  (Juniors and Seniors)  You must apply, be interviewed and accepted in to the class.  You will take a class at the King Career Center January 26 – April 18, 2009, Monday through Thursday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Class content will be Alaskan history, flora and fauna, geology and much more; at the end of the class, the AK Railroad employment personnel will interview students.  If selected, you will become a tour guide for the railroad during the summer.  Download an application at www.addk12.org/events/AKRR.asp   Application is to be delivered to King Career Center, Main Office, 2650 E.     12/15/08                        AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  The AXA Achievement Scholarship offers college scholarships of $10,000 and $25,000 to high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement  in their activities in school, the community or the workplace.  The scholarships are sponsored by the AXA Foundation, in association with U.S. News & World Report.  Application and required documents must be postmarked no later than December 15, 2008.  www.axa-achievement.com

    12/31/08                        All-Ink.com COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  All-Ink.com is offering up to $5,000 in scholarships to qualified students who are enrolled or planning to participate in an accredited college or university program during the Fall 2009 or full-year 2009-2010 school year.  Students who apply must be a United States citizen or permanent resident with a minimum 2.5 GPA.  In addition, students applying are required to complete a 50 to 200 word essay about who has had the greatest impact on your life, and a 50 to 200 word essay on what you hope to achieve in your personal and professional life after completing college.  Application deadline is December 31, 2008.  Complete your application on-line:  www.all-ink.com/scholarship.html

    01/09/09                        RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  The Ron Brown Scholar Program is a national program that awards scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated African-American high school seniors who intend to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time.  The program honors the late Ronald H. Brown,  Secretary of Commerce during the Clinton administration.  These scholarships are reserved for exceptional individuals who share Brown’s traits of excellence, leadership, commitment to public service, and desire to make a difference.  In addition, applicants must demonstrate financial need.  A minimum of ten students will be designated Ron Brown Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years.  January 9, 2009 is the final postmarked deadline in order to be considered for ONLY the Ron Brown Scholar Program.    www.ronbrown.org

    01/12/09                        GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  The Gates Millennium Scholars, was established to provide outstanding low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest.  Students are eligible to be considered for the scholarship if they have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of nomination, will be entering a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking freshman in the fall of 2009, have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities, and meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.   Nomination materials must be submitted online before Monday, January 12, 2009 or postmarked on or before January 12, 2009.    www.gmsp.org

    01/12/09                        ALASKA ENGINEERING EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  One $2,000 AEEF Scholarship from all state-wide applicants, awarded as $1,000 for two years.  Scholarships are also awarded at the local level in Anchorage. 

    AEEF scholarships are limited to high school seniors who will be pursuing a degree in engineering.  Scholarship recipients must be enrolled in an ABET, Inc accredited engineering program at the college or university they attended.  In a 500 word essay, discuss your interest in engineering, your major area of study or specialization and the job you wish to pursue after receiving your college degree.  Application deadline is January 12, 2009.

    01/13/09                        CONOCOPHILLIPS ALASKA, INC 2008 SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  ConocoPhillips Alaska’s  scholarship program provides educational assistance to Alaska youth showing potential for achievement and the capacity to make a significant contribution to the state upon completion of their education.  The candidate’s service to their community, service to their school, school achievements and financial need are considered.  Scholastic achievement will be used mainly as an indicator of the ability of the candidate to grow through learning.  A total of 20 scholarships will be awarded: seven $5,000 in-state scholarships and thirteen $3,000 general scholarships.  Applications must be postmarked no later than  January 13, 2009.  www.conocophillipsalaska.com

    01/15/09                        DELL SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  The Dell Scholars Program is a need-based scholarship that recognizes academic potential in lower-income and underserved students.  The scholarship helps students who have worked hard to prepare themselves for higher education yet may have lower GPAs and test scores because of adverse personal situations or surroundings.  Dell Scholars are students who have the drive and potential of academic success when provided with the necessary financial assistance.  To apply, seniors should be in an eligible college readiness program, and meet the criteria listed .   Apply online:  www.DellScholars.org  Application deadline:  January 15, 2009.

    01/19/09                        ASIAN & PACIFIC ISLANDER AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND:  (Seniors)  The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund is the nation’s largest 501©3 non-profit organization that provides scholarship to Asian and Pacific Islander Americans with financial need.  Applicant must be enrolling in a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student, have a minimum GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale and must apply for the FAFSA.  See the web site for more details:  http://www.apiasf.org.  Applications must be postmarked on or by January 19, 2009.

    01/23/09                        PRIDE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  The Greater Seattle Business Association and the Pride Foundation award scholarships to build leadership and promote diversity in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight-ally communities.  Awards may be used for any postsecondary education.  Preference is given to students who are self-identified LGBT, members of LGBT families, or straight-allies who have been strong supportive of the LGBT community.  Completed application must be postmarked by Friday, January 23, 2009.  www.pridefoundation.org/scholarships

    01/30/09                        ALASKA’S JUNIOR MISS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  (Senior Females)  Ladies, sign up for Alaska Junior Miss 2009!  The 2008 AJM earned a full four-year tuition scholarship at University of Alaska, nearly $3,000 in cash and a paid trip to Mobile, Alabama competing for the title of America’s Junior Miss who earns over $50,000 in cash awards.  ELIGIBILITY:  Female graduating high school in 2009 planning college with a good academic record (min 2.8 GPA), good health, talent performance ability.  REGISTRATION:  Sign up at www.ajm.org.  Deadline:  January 30, 2009.

    01/31/09                        UNION PLUS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  Scholarship awards range from $500 to $4,000.  Open to all Union Plus dependent children attending or plan on attending college or university, a community college, or a technical college or trade school.  Applicants for scholarships are evaluated according to academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor.  Applications must be postmarked by January 31, 2009 in order to be considered. www.unionplus.org/benefits/education/scholarships/up.cfm

    01/31/09                        SIMON YOUTH FOUNDATION COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)       Simon Youth Foundation has established the Community Scholarship Program to help meet the financial needs of eligible students pursuing higher education.  The foundation will award a one-time monetary scholarship of $1,500 to a select number of high school seniors nationwide who plan to enroll in any accredited college, university or vocational-technical school and who meet the program’s eligibility requirements.  www.simonyouth.scholarshipamerica.org  Application postmark deadline is January 31, 2009.

    01/31/09                        DISCOVER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  (Juniors)  The Discover Scholarship Program seeks to honor the exemplary achievements of high school juniors from diverse backgrounds in all aspects of their lives.  Since 1991, the program has assisted over 6,000 students with nearly $16 million in scholarship aid.  Up to ten $30,000 scholarships are available across 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Applicant must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale for the previous two academic years (9th and 10th grade only).  Students should apply online between December 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009.  www.discovercard.com/tribute.htm

    01/31/09                        WAL-MART ASSOCIATE SCHOLARSHIP:  $2,000

    Available to high school seniors graduating by July 31, 2009.  Must either be actively employed with Wal-Mart stores, Inc. for at least six consecutive months as of April 25, 2008 –OR- May be a dependent of a Wal-Mart Associate who does not qualify for the Walton Family Foundation Scholarship due to the Associate’s parent’s part-time status or actively employed less than twelve consecutive months.  Must have scored at lease an 18 Composite ACT or 800 SAT (Critical Reading or Verbal + Math) scores.  Must be enrolled full time (at least 12 college credit hours) in the fall 2009 semester and the spring 2010 semester.  .  Applications are obtained, completed, and submitted only on-line at:  www.walmartfoundation.org and link to www.scholarshipadministrator.net.  Access Key is WMAS.  Students must use one of the two Wal-Mart four-digit location numbers:  Eagle River 2188 or Anchorage Mid-town 2070, or in order to process the application.  Only one application per person will be accepted.  All entries must be submitted no later than January 31, 2009.

    02/06/09                        BEST TEEN CHEF COMPETITION:  (Seniors)  The Best Teen Chef competition is for high school seniors who love to cook!  Interested students are asked to compete for the chance to take part in a cook-off to demonstrate their culinary skills.  The grand prize winner will receive a full-tuition scholarship to The Art of Institute at which they enter the competition, and will be designated as “Best Teen Chef 2008.”  Entries must be received by February 6, 2009.  www.artinstitutes.edu/btc

     

    02/06/09                        AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS/ART INSTITUTES POSTER DESIGN  COMPETITION:  The competition challenges high school seniors to create a poster design that interprets the theme “Life is Better With Art In It.”  The grand prize winner will receive a $25,000 tuition scholarship to The Art Institute at which they enter the competition.  More than $100,000 in tuition scholarship to The Art Institutes will be awarded.  All complete entries must be received by February 6, 2009.  www.artinstitutes.edu/poster

     

    02/09/09                        BURGER KING SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  Burger King Scholars awards are $1,000 each and may be used for educational expenses, such as tuition fees and books, during the first year of college or post-secondary vocational/technical school.  For a student to qualify, he/she must be a high school senior and a U.S. resident.  Applicants  must also maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher, work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year, actively involved in community service activities, demonstrate financial need and plan to enroll in an accredited two/or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall 2009.  Easy online application, Access Key:  BKS.   The application deadline:  February 09, 2009.  www.bk.com/scholars

     

    02/10/09                        KFC COLONEL’S SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  KFC Colonel’s Scholars is looking for outstanding seniors with financial need and entrepreneurial spirit to qualify for the KFC Colonel’s Scholars program.  Awards are up to $20,000 for tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board.  To qualify, graduating high school seniors must:  have a minimum GPA of 2.75, enroll in a public college or university within their state of legal residence, plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and demonstrate financial need.   Online scholarship application will be available from December 1, 2008, to February 10, 2009, www.kfcscholars.org or call toll-free 1-866-KFC-7240.

     

    02/18/09                        HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND/GENERAL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  HSF/General College Scholarships are designed to assist students of Hispanic heritage obtain a college degree.  The award amounts generally range from $1,000 to $5,000.   Other eligibility requirements:  be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with a permanent resident or passport stamped I-551, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have plans to enroll full-time in a degree seeking program at a two year U.S. accredited institution in the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Island or Guam during the 2009-2010

    02/18/09                        COMMISSARY SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MILITARY CHILDREN:  (Seniors)  The program awards $1,500.   Unmarried children of active duty, Reserve/Guard and retired military personnel may apply for a Scholarship for Military Children.  Eligibility, including survivors of deceased members, will be determined using the DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) database and that they have a current ID card.  Applicants must be planning to enroll, full-time in the fall of 2008 in an undergraduate program of studies leading to a Bachelor’s Degree at an accredited college or university.  Student must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 basis).  Applications are available at your local commissary, online or CRC.  Applications must be returned to the commissary by February 18, 2009.  www.militaryscholar.org

    02/20/09                        DENALI ALASKAN FEDERAL CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  The Denali Federal Credit Union Scholarship committee will select 10 recipients for $1,000 scholarships.  All existing primary (first person named) members of the Credit Union are eligible.  Student must be a high school senior.  Recipients must use the scholarship to attend a licensed/certified program.  Applicants must have a minimum 2.25 GPA and be enrolled as a full-time student.  Applications must be postmarked or delivered to any branch office of Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union by February 20, 2009.  www.denalifcu.org/teenpower

     

    02/27/09                        ASIAN ALASKA CULTURAL SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  (For Students of Japanese Ancestry)  The Asian Alaskan Cultural Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is:  To promote mutual respect and understanding of the Asian and American cultures; to promote programs and understanding of the Asian and American; and to promote business/trade and cultural exchanges between Alaska and the Asian Pacific countries.  The amount of the scholarship will range from $300 to $500 depending on the amount of funds that are secured through fundraising efforts.  Application deadline:  February 27, 2009.

    03/15/09                        HEWLETT-PACKARD SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  The HP Scholars program seeks to recognize graduating underrepresented minority (African American, Latino or American Indian) high school seniors who wish to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, computer engineering or electrical engineering.  Students selected for the program are awarded a $12,000 scholarship (maximum of $3,000 per year).  Each HP scholar also receives an HP Scholar Productivity Package (computer, PDA and printer).  Applicant must be a graduating high school senior enrolling as a full-time first-year student or a community college student transferring into University of California, Los Angles, North Carolina A&T, Morgan State University, or University of Washington.  Application must be postmarked by March 15, 2009.  www.hp.com/go/hpscholars

     

    03/31/09                        JANICE M. SCOTT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  The Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund has made available six $2,500 scholarships for academic school year 2008/2009.  To qualify, high school seniors must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, matriculate at a U.S accredited four-year college or university full time during school year 2009-2010 and have demonstrated leadership abilities through participating in community services, extra curricular or other activities.  Application must be postmarked or received on or before March 31, 2009.

    MILITARY INFORMATION

    SELECTIVE SERVICE REGISTRATION:  Men who are age 18 through 25 are REQUIRED to REGISTER! and can do so on-line or  they can get Selective Service Form from the CRC...also available at your local POST OFFICE. http://www.sss.gov

    The ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) Programs offered by the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Marine Corps train qualified young men and women to become officers in those services upon graduation from college.  ROTC Scholarships:  You don’t have to have a scholarship to participate in ROTC, but hundreds of ROTC students receive scholarships every year.   Scholarships are competitively awarded on merit.  The main considerations are high school academic record, SAT or ACT scores, extracurricular activities, and the personal interview.  ROTC Online:  Before you call for information, visit ROTC Web sites.  There you can locate specific colleges and universities where ROTC programs are available.  www.todaysmilitary.com

    COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Anchorage, Inc:  Be a High School Big.  High School Big is an opportunity for young people to grow, learn, and serve.  The main role of a High School Big Brother/Big Sister is to be a positive role model and friend to an elementary school student.  The mentors see their mentee one hour a week consistently throughout the school year.  Volunteers meet with the student at the mentee’s school and spend time together working on school work, playing a game, shooting baskets, doing craft, having lunch, or talking.  Big Brothers Big Sisters staff provides ongoing support of the match.  High School Big mentors must be at least 16 years of age and be willing to make a minimum one-year (school year) commitment.  Call 263-2621 and enroll today.  Applications are available in the CRC.  www.bbbs.ak.org

     

    Anchorage Youth Court (AYC):  Trains youth in grades 7-12, who are between the ages of 12 and 18, to represent and judge their peers in actual criminal cases.  Anchorage youth serve as judges, jurors, and prosecuting and defense attorneys.  In preparation for the Anchorage Youth Court Bar Exam, students receive an 8-week training course taught by local attorneys.  The course covers Youth Court jurisdiction, procedure, evidence, advocacy, and case preparation.  Classes are held at various times during the year at area high schools.  Call the AYC office (274-5986) to find out when the next set of classes will take place.
