    12/14/07                        FORREST JONES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  The Alaska Air Carriers Association (AACA) is a sponsor of the Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarship.  The amount to be awarded each year will be determined by the Scholarship Committee.  A student pursuing a 4-year college degree in Aviation Technology, or applying to attend a flight school program or a certified A & P program may apply.  The deadline to apply is December 14, 2007.    www.alaskaaircarriers.org

    12/15/07                        AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  The AXA Achievement Scholarship offers college scholarships of $10,000 and $25,000 to high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement  in their activities in school, the community or the workplace.  The scholarships are sponsored by the AXA Foundation, in association with U.S. News & World Report.  Application and required documents must be postmarked no later than December 15, 2007.  www.axa-achievement.com

    12/15/07                        DOBSON PRIDE SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  Dobson Communications Corporation has established a scholarship program to assist their customer who plan to continue education in college or vocational school programs.  Applicants to the Dobson PRIDE Scholarship must:  Be customers of Dobson Cellular System or Cellular One from Dobson Cellular Systems.  Students who are children of customers and living in the customer’s immediate household are eligible.  Have a  minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.  If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a one-time $2,500 award.  The application must be submitted electronically by December 15, 2007.  Go to www.dobson.net and click “community”.

    01/09/08                        RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  The Ron Brown Scholar Program is a national program that awards scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated African-American high school seniors who intend to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time.  The program honors the late Ronald H. Brown, Secretary of Commerce during the Clinton administration.  These scholarships are reserved for exceptional individuals who share Brown’s traits of excellence, leadership, commitment to public service, and desire to make a difference.  In addition, applicants must demonstrate financial need.  A minimum of ten students will be designated Ron Brown Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years.  January 9, 2008 is the final postmarked deadline in order to be considered for ONLY the Ron Brown Scholar Program.    www.ronbrown.org

    01/11/08                        GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  The Gates Millennium Scholars, was established to provide outstanding low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest.  Students are eligible to be considered for the scholarship if they have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of nomination, will be entering a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking freshman in the fall of 2008, have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities, and meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.  Paper applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2007.  Online applications must be submitted by January 11, 2008.  www.gmsp.org

    01/15/08                        DELL SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  The Dell Scholars Program is a need-based scholarship that recognizes academic potential in lower-income and underserved students.  The scholarship helps students who have worked hard to prepare themselves for higher education yet may have lower GPAs and test scores because of adverse personal situations or surroundings.  Dell Scholars are students who have the drive and potential of academic success when provided with the necessary financial assistance.  To apply, seniors should be in an eligible college readiness program, and meet the criteria listed on www.DellScholars.org

    01/15/08                        EDUCATION IS FREEDOM NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors) This scholarship program provides college scholarships in the amount of $2,000 to high school seniors that meet the following criteria:  U.S. resident for one year at time of application, current U.S. High School senior, GPA of 3.0 to 3.5 (4.0 scale), first-time enrollment in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited 2 or 4-year college or university.  Application must be submitted electronically by January 15, 2008.  www.educationisfreedom.org

    01/15/08                        CONOCOPHILLIPS ALASKA, INC 2008 SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  ConocoPhillips Alaska’s  scholarship program provides educational assistance to Alaska youth showing potential for achievement and the capacity to make a significant contribution to the state upon completion of their education.  The candidate’s service to their community, service to their school, school achievements and financial need are considered.  Scholastic achievement will be used mainly as an indicator of the ability of the candidate to grow through learning.  A total of 20 scholarships will be awarded: seven $5,000 in-state scholarships and thirteen general

    01/15/08                        MCKELVEY FOUNDATION ENTREPRENEURIAL SCHOLARSHIP:   The McKelvey Foundation awards $40,000 scholarships to young entrepreneurs nationwide who have started their own businesses.  To be considered for this award, applicants must:  be a graduating senior 2008, attend a four-year college or university, own and operate a business for at least 1 year, have at least one paid employee and have sales revenue (unless non-profit).  See application online for more details www.mckelveyfoundation.org.  Complete online application by January 15, 2008.

    01/15/08                        BRONFMAN YOUTH FELLOWSHIPS IN ISRAEL:  The Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel is a summer program, which will take place from June 30 through August 6, 2008.  The Fellowships are awarded competitively to twenty-six individuals who will be entering the twelfth grade.  Fellows meet with a wide range of Israeli thinkers, public personalities and religious and communal leaders, experience a week-long Mifgash (encounter) with Israeli teenagers, and study Jewish texts.  Application package must be postmarked by January 15, 2008.  www.bronfman.org

    01/25/08                        PRIDE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  The Greater Seattle Business Association and the Pride Foundation award scholarships to build leadership and promote diversity in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight-ally communities.  Awards may be used for any postsecondary education.   Preference is given to students who are self-identified LGBT, members of LGBT families, or straight-allies who have been strongly supportive of the LGBT community.  Completed application must be postmarked by Friday, January 25, 2008.  www.pridefoundation.org/scholarships

    01/31/08                        UNION PLUS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  Scholarship awards range from $500 to $4,000.  Open to all Union Plus dependent children attending or plan on attending college or university, a community college, or a technical college or trade school.  Applicants for scholarships are evaluated according to academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor.  Applications must be postmarked by January 31, 2008 in order to be considered. www.unionplus.org/benefits/education/scholarships

    01/31/08                        SIMON YOUTH FOUNDATION COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)       Simon Youth Foundation has established the Community Scholarship Program to help meet the financial needs of eligible students pursuing higher education.  The foundation will award a one-time monetary scholarship of $1,500 to a select number of high school seniors nationwide who plan to enroll in any accredited college, university or vocational-technical school and who meet the program’s eligibility requirements.  www.simonyouth.scholarshipamerica.org  Application postmark deadline is January 31, 2008.

    01/31/08                        DISCOVER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  (Juniors)  The Discover Scholarship Program (formerly Card Tribute Award Scholarship Program seeks to honor the exemplary achievements of high school juniors in all aspects of their lives.  Up to 10 scholarships for $30,000 each available across 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Juniors with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale and plans to continue their education beyond high school in any U.S. accredited training are encouraged to apply.  The postmarked deadline for application is January 31, 2008.  www.discovercard.com/tribute.htm

    02/01/08                        KAPLAN/NEWSWEEK “MY TURN” ESSAY COMPETITION:  (Grades 9-12)  To enter, each student must complete the official entry form and submit it with two (2) copies of the original essay (500-1,000 words) on a topic of the student’s choice, where the student shares his or her opinion, experience or personal feeling.  The essay competition is open to any citizen and/or resident of the United States who, as of January 1, 2008, is enrolled as a high-school student at the time of entry, and who intends to attend a college or university following high school.  Entries must be received no later than February 1, 2008.  www.kaptest.com/essay

    02/10/08                        COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY 2008 – HELP WITH THE FAFSA:  This event is designed to help students and families, particularly low-income and first generation college goers, clear the paperwork hurdle when applying for college financial aid.  Financial aid professionals from Alaska’s higher education institutions and Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education join with local volunteers, to provide families assistance in completing the FAFSA.  This year’s event (Sunday February 10) will be held in three locations in Anchorage:  Wendler Middle School, West High School and Polaris K-12.  For the latest information check out the College Goal Sunday web site at www.alaskacollegegoalsunday.com

    02/15/08                        BURGER KING SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  Burger King Scholars awards are $1,000 each and may be used for educational expenses, such as tuition fees and books, during the first year of college or post-secondary vocational/technical school.  For a student to qualify, he/she must be a high school senior and a U.S. resident.  Applicants  must also maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher, work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year, actively involved in community service activities, demonstrate financial need and plan to enroll in an accredited two/or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall 2008.   The application deadline:  February 15, 2008.  www.bk.com/scholars

    02/15/08                        NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR COOPERATIVE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  The National Co-op Scholarship Program consists of 185 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each for high school seniors who are planning to participate in college cooperative education.  Students must be accepted by and plan to enroll for the 2008-2009 academic year at any one of the National Commission Member Institutions (see application).  A high school GPA of 3.5 or better is required.  All scholarship material must be received on or before February 15, 2008.  www.co-op.edu/scholarship

    02/15/08                        USA FUNDS ACCESS TO EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP:  For the 2008-2009 academic year USA Funds will award up to $3.2 million in new, renewable scholarships to students demonstrating financial need.  Students who plan to enroll in qualified post-secondary education programs are eligible for $1,500 awards.  Qualifications:  for high-school seniors, for students from household with annual income of $35,000 or less.   Priority consideration given to students who are members of an ethnic-minority group or have a documented physical disability.  Apply on-line:  through February 15, 2008 www.usafunds.org/scholarship

    02/15/08                        UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA ANCHORAGE (UAA) SCHOLARSHIPS:  (Seniors)  Check out the UAA scholarship opportunities for the 08-09 academic year.  Scholarships are available for all majors.  The application process is quick and easy.  It is well worth your time to research the available scholarship opportunities.  Visit the UAA Scholarship website for information on how to apply:  www.uaa.alaska.edu/scholarships.  Application Deadline:  February 15, 2008.

     

    02/20/08                        COMMISSARY SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MILITARY CHILDREN:  (Seniors)  Unmarried children of active duty, Reserve/Guard and retired military personnel may apply for a Scholarship for Military Children.  Eligibility, including survivors of deceased members, will be determined using the DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) database and that they have a current ID card.  Applicants must be planning to enroll, full-time in the fall of 2008 in an undergraduate program of studies leading to a Bachelor’s Degree at an accredited college or university.  Student must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 basis).  Applications are available at your local commissary, online or CRC.  Applications must be returned to the commissary by February 20, 2008.  www.militaryscholar.org

    02/28/08                        100 BLACK MEN OF AMERICA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  Through gifts provided by corporate sponsors, the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is able to provide scholarships to hundreds of deserving high school students on an equal opportunity basis regardless of race, sex, creed, or religious preference.  Scholarship awards should be applied toward tuition, room, board and, books and range from $1,000 to $3,000.  Eligibility criteria:  high school student transitioning to college, minimum GPA of 2.5 and leadership involvement.  Applicant packets must be postmarked by February 28, 2008.  www.100blackmen.org

    02/29/08                        U.S. BANK INTERNET SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  One of the biggest challenges college-bound seniors face is how to pay for their higher education.  U.S. Bank’s Internet Scholarship Program can help.  For the last ten years, this program sponsored by the U.S. Bank Student Banking Division has awarded over $290,000 in scholarships to college-bound high school seniors.  This year, U.S. Bank will again award up to thirty $1,000 scholarships to seniors planning to attend accredited two- or four-year colleges full-time next fall.  Scholarship award recipients are selected through a random process.  Students can apply online, visit the U.S. Bank web site at www.usbank.com/studentbanking.  Applications will be accepted through February 29, 2008.

    02/29/08                        DENALI ALASKAN FEDERAL CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  The Denali Federal Credit Union Scholarship committee will select 10 recipients for $1,000 scholarships.  All existing primary (first person named) members of the Credit Union are eligible.  Student must be a high school senior.  Recipients must use the scholarship to attend a licensed/certified program.  Applicants must have a minimum 2.25 GPA and be enrolled as a full-time student.  Applications must be postmarked or delivered to any branch office of Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union by February 29, 2008.  www.denalifcu.org/teenpower

    03/01/08                        AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY (ACS) SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  The American Chemical Society sponsors a scholarship program for qualified applicants who want to enter the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or other chemically related fields such as environmental science, materials science or other chemically related fields.  Students interested in two-year college programs for chemical technology may also qualify for scholarships.  The program is designed to encourage African-American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian students to pursue undergraduate college degrees in the chemical technology.  Awards are for up to $5,000 per academic year.  The deadline for submitting applications is March 1, 2007.  www.chemistry.org/scholars

    03/01/08                        MAJOR GENERAL JAMES URDSANO SCHOLARSHIP FUND:  (Seniors) Major General Ursano Scholarship Fund was established as a secondary mission to help Army families with the costs of post secondary undergraduate level education, vocational training, and preparation for acceptance by military service academies for their dependent children.  Dependent children, stepchildren or legally adopted children or a ward of Army soldiers on active duty, retired, or deceased while on active duty or after retirement.  Children of Reserve or National Guard soldiers mobilized under Title 10 status for the entire academic year.  The Army soldier and student must be registered in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System (DEERS).  The postmark deadline is March 1, 2008.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply online.  www.aerhq.org

    03/03/08                        CHEF OF THE YEAR CONTEST:  Johnson & Wales University, the world-renowned culinary educator, invites high school seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen to enter their challenge.  Through this competition, which receives national media attention, you could earn scholarship dollars to one of JWU’s four campuses (Providence, North Miami; Denver or Charlotte).  Contestants must create an entrée or dessert using an original recipe which either incorporates their family heritage (i.e. nationality, etc) or has a strong ethnicity that appeals to them.  All completed entries must be postmarked or received via e-mail by March 3, 2008.  www.jwu.edu/culinary

    03/15/08                        HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND/GENERAL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  HSF/General College Scholarships are designed to assist students of Hispanic heritage obtain a college degree.  The award amounts generally range from $1,000 to $5,000.   Other eligibility requirements:  be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with a permanent resident or passport stamped I-551, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have plans to enroll full-time in a degree seeking program at a two year U.S. accredited institution in the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Island or Guam during the 2008-2009 academic year, must apply for federal aid by completing the FAFSA.  Application deadline:  March 15, 2008.  Apply Online:  www.hsf.net

     03/15/08                        HEWLETT-PACKARD SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  (Seniors)  The HP Scholars program seeks to recognize graduating underrepresented minority (African American, Latino or American Indian) high school seniors who wish to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, computer engineering or electrical engineering.  Students selected for the program are awarded a $12,000 scholarship (maximum of $3,000 per year).  Each HP scholar also receives an HP Scholar Productivity Package (computer, PDA and printer).  Applicant must be a graduating high school senior enrolling as a full-time first-year student or a community college student transferring into University of California, Los Angles, North Carolina A&T, Morgan State University, or University of Washington.  Application must be postmarked by March 15, 2008.  www.hp.com/scholars

    03/20/08                        AYN RAND ANTHEM ESSAY CONTEST:  (For 9th and 10th Graders)  First Prize $2,000 cash award.  Essays will be judged on both style and content.  Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organized.  Winning essays must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of Anthem.  Essay must be postmarked no later than March 20, 2008.  www.aynrand.org/contests

    03/31/08                        JACKIE ROBINSON FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  The Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship Program provides comprehensive support services to minority students at institutions of higher education: four-year scholarship awards of up to $7,200 annually.  Must be a minority  high school senior accepted by a four-year accredited college or university, demonstrate high academic achievement, SAT of 1000 or ACT of  21 or above, evidence of leadership potential, and financial need.  Only applications submitted via the Jackie Robinson website will be eligible for consideration.  Application deadline is March 31, 2008.  www.jackierobinson.org

    03/31/08                        RURAL ALASKA HONORS INSTITUTE (RAHI):  The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Rural Alaska Honors Institute, founded at the request of the Alaska Federation of Natives, was established to prepare rural and Alaska Native high school students for academic excellence and college success.  Those who apply should have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and plan to have finished their junior or senior year in 2008.  Applicants should be 18 or younger on July 15, 2008.  UAF courses are offered for full university credit (7 to 11 credits).  Most credits earned apply toward requirements for an academic degree.  This program is May 27 – July 10, 2008.  Application Deadline:  Received in RAHI office no later than March 31, 2008.  www.uaf.edu/rahi/

    03/31/08                        NON COMMISSIONED OFFICERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  Children of members of the Non Commissioned Officers Association are eligible.  Include with complete application:  two letters of recommendation from teachers; a personal recommendation from an adult who is not a relative; a handwritten autobiography; official transcript of high school grades; ACT or SAT scores, and a composition on Americanism (200 + words).  Complete application packages must be submitted by March 31, 2008.  www.nocausa.org

    04/11/08                        AMERICAN FIRE SPRINKLER ASSOCIATION (AFSA) SCHOLARSHIP:  (Seniors)  AFSA Scholarship Contest is open to high school seniors who plan to further their education at a college/university or certified trade school in the United States starting with the fall 2008 semester.  The scholarship is not based on financial need.  All applicants must read the “Fire Sprinkler Essay” (approximately 3,000 words) about automatic fire sprinklers and take a ten-question multiple-choice open book test.  For each question answered correctly, students will receive one (1) entry into a drawing for one of ten $2,000 scholarships.  Contest details, essay requirements and application process can be found at www.afsascholarship.org.  Entry Deadline:  April 11, 2008.

    MILITARY INFORMATION

    COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Anchorage, Inc:  Be a High School Big.  High School Big is an opportunity for young people to grow, learn, and serve.  The main role of a High School Big Brother/Big Sister is to be a positive role model and friend to an elementary school student.  The mentors see their mentee one hour a week consistently throughout the school year.  Volunteers meet with the student at the mentee’s school and spend time together working on school work, playing a game, shooting baskets, doing craft, having lunch, or talking.  Big Brothers Big Sisters staff provides ongoing support of the match.  High School Big mentors must be at least 16 years of age and be willing to make a minimum one-year (school year) commitment.  Call 263-2621 and enroll today.  Applications are available in the CRC.  www.bbbs.ak.org

     

    Anchorage Youth Court (AYC):  Trains youth in grades 7-12, who are between the ages of 12 and 18, to represent and judge their peers in actual criminal cases.  Anchorage youth serve as judges, jurors, and prosecuting and defense attorneys.  In preparation for the Anchorage Youth Court Bar Exam, students receive an 8-week training course taught by local attorneys.  The course covers Youth Court jurisdiction, procedure, evidence, advocacy, and case preparation.  Classes are held at various times during the year at area high schools.  Call the AYC office (274-5986) to find out when the next set of classes will take place.

    Municipality of Anchorage Volunteer Internship Program:  The Municipality of Anchorage is looking for capable high school juniors or seniors that are willing to learn about office administration within city government.  This is a volunteer internship that will introduce the applicant to the many aspects of city government while working in one of the following offices:  Civil and Criminal Department of Law, Information Technology, Office of Equal Opportunity and the Mayor’s Office.  How to Apply:  Please mail, fax or drop off your resume, sample constituent letter and two letters of recommendation to The Office of Mayor Mark Begich.  www.muni.org/mayor/internships.cfm
