In coming years, Bartlett will be implementing academies
as part of the grant to create smaller learning communities within
the large high schools. These academies will consist of approximately
500 students and 30 teachers. Next fall, Bartlett will begin with
a portion of one academy in which core content teachers will be clustered
in the same area of the school. We currently anticipate that the
initial academy will include approximately 15 teachers, and will
include students from the ninth and tenth grades. Math and Science
teachers will have the same prep periods for cross curricular collaboration,
as will English and History/Social studies teachers. Students will
continue to have the opportunity to select electives from all available
options, including world language, music, art, PE, ROTC, technology,
family and consumer science, and others. The smaller learning community
process is designed to enhance the education process by providing
a supportive environment, while still providing the opportunities
that are only available within a large, comprehensive high school.
A pyramid of intervention will also be part of the academies. Students
who fall behind or struggle in their classes will receive additional
support from a cadre of teachers who know his/her strengths and challenges.
Teachers will have more opportunity to collaborate regarding student
achievement, due to consolidated scheduling. |
