Honesty! The Best Policy

How do we teach it to our children?

Ben Franklin reminded us:

"Honesty is the best policy."

Honesty represents what is fundamentally good in a person and sometimes stands for his or her integrity.  Learning the value of honesty, what it means and why it's important, begins at home long before a child becomes a student. With a good honest foundation, your student will most likely adhere to these principles for the rest of his/her life.

Following are some suggestions which can assist you as parents to help develop a sense of honesty in your child.

1.     Keep asking questions of your children to clarify a situation.

a.     Are you sure?  Tell me again how it happened.

b.     Give me more details.  Will Billy's mother be home?

c.     How will you get the answers if you do not understand?

2.     Praise  your children when they tell the truth, especially in difficult situations, i.e., "You did the right thing.   Thanks for making me proud of you."

3.     Talk  about honest and dishonest acts as they occur around you:  "It was very sad that Mrs. Smith lost her wallet.  Whoever took it was wrong to take something that was not theirs."

4.   Concerning schoolwork, encourage your child to do the best. Let him/her know that's all you expect.  Let them know cheating to get a better grade is not doing their best.

5.     Do not tolerate stealing, whether it's of little value or more.  Anything taken without permission  should be returned by the one who took it, along with an apology.

6.     Build an image of an honest person in your child's mind.  Tell him/her "You make me very happy knowing you're so honest."

7.     Set an example your child can follow.

Ice Rink

Thanks to Mr. Dale Edin and the Anchorage Fire Department, we have everything we need to finally begin making ice for our skating rink.  If you have time and want to help us prepare ice for the rink, we'd love to have you.  Call the office at 742-1750 for more information.  Thank you.

Nurse's Corner

At-School Medications

Students are not allowed to carry any medications to school, whether prescription or over-the-counter drugs.  Either of these must be brought to the nurse's office by a parent or guardian.  The nurse will not dispense any medications to students unless accompanied by an ASD form signed by the parent and/or physician.  This procedure is in place for the safety of your child.

                      Winter Clothing

One more reminder!!  It's COLD out there.  Have you checked how your child was dressed this morning?  Will you check again tomorrow and the next day?  They MUST come dressed for all types of weather - layered is best.  It's easy to take too much clothing off when it gets too warm, but a shortage of warm clothes is dangerous.  Dress up, button up, and cover up!!
