*Some kids took their lunches to the library for book club.

Note: Wednesday hot lunches = ~200, other days = ~180.

Note: Mrs. Lori Benkert: “Hot lunch waste should be less than usual today because of the food served.”

5th and 6th Graders produce less waste than other grades.

11/03/04 (Wednesday)

Each student generates ~71 lbs of lunch waste per school year

(0.394 lbs/person x 180 school days)

Bear Valley Elementary students generate ~40,000 lbs or 20 tons of lunch waste per year.

(71 lbs of lunch waste x 558 students = 39618 lbs of lunch waste per year)

Bear Valley students generate enough lunch waste to fill two 6th grade classrooms.

If we estimate each bag of trash generated during lunch to be 8ft3, Bear Valley students generate 8ft3 x 14 bags trash/day x 180 school days = ~ 20,000ft3 of lunch waste in one school year.

11/04/04 (Thursday)

Each student generates ~70 lbs of lunch waste per school year

(0.387 lbs/person x 180 school days)

Bear Valley Elementary students generate ~40,000 lbs or 20 tons of lunch waste per year.

(70 lbs of lunch waste x 558 students = 39060 lbs of lunch waste per year)

Bear Valley students generate enough lunch waste to fill two 6th grade classrooms.

If we estimate each bag of trash generated during lunch to be 8ft3, Bear Valley students generate 8ft3 x 14 bags trash/day x 180 school days = ~ 20,000ft3 of lunch waste in one school year.
