This innovative course involves an interdisciplinary, “place-based” study of Anchorage, Alaska.  Classroom studies, lab exercises, and research in this elective course will allow selected Central Middle School of Science students to combine science, social studies, language arts, history, geography, mathematics, technology and more in an in-depth investigation of our city, fostering a relationship between students and the place they live.  The city of Anchorage will become a “living laboratory.”  The objective of this course is to cultivate, in each student, a deep understanding and appreciation of the social, economical, historical, political, environmental, cultural, and recreational past, present and future of Anchorage, Alaska.  Specific course elements include: global positioning technology (GPS), the Geological Survey, walking tours, museum trips, volunteer projects, elder interviews, research, presentations, in-depth outdoor labs, guest speakers, extensive student publication, and more.
