Welcome to a new school year filled
with exciting educational experiences. My name is Mrs. Courtright,
your child's teacher. Please let me take this opportunity to
tell you a little about myself. I was raised in Idaho and moved
to Alaska in 1990. My husband, Charles, and I have four children.
Prior to my return to school I was a full time volunteer in my
children's classrooms. In my free time I enjoy needlework and
fishing with my family. My B.A. degree is from the University
of Alaska Anchorage. This is my second year teaching at Chester
Valley. I am very excited to be teaching first grade and looking
forward to an exciting, productive year working with you and
your child.
Importance of Parents
2nd grade is an important year for setting the foundation for
your child's success throughout their school career. To set a
strong foundation requires teamwork between the student, the
parent and the teacher. You are important to your child's
education. If your child sees that you are interested in school
and their education, they will be too! I believe that your
child receives the best education possible when we all work together
as a team. I look forward to working with you throughout the
year.
Classroom Visits
You are always welcome
in the classroom, both as a visitor and as a volunteer. Classroom
volunteering makes a big difference!
Please fill out the Parent Time and Talent Form in this
packet and let me know when you are coming to volunteer so that
I may be better prepared to make your volunteering time as efficient
as possible.
When coming into the school you must check in with the front
office so that they know you are here before coming to the classroom.
While class is in session the students and their learning are
my priority; I will not be able to talk with you at that time.
If you need to talk, please call or come in during office hours
or leave a message and I will contact you as soon as possible.
Supplies
12 #2 pencils 1 large box of Kleenex
1 pair blunt scissors 1 bottle white glue
4 glue sticks 1 box of crayons (24)
1 big eraser 1 pkg. colored pencils
box or bag for supplies Zip lock baggies (gallon and sandwich)
PE shoes - Please have good fitting
gym shoes, with names written on them, for your child to keep
at school.
Please discourage your child from
bringing in items that are not on the supply list. Extra items
are often a distraction in school. They do however make great
incentives in a special workspace at home.
Homework
The most important homework will be for your child to READ
each day. That reading can be with parents, siblings or other
relatives, friends or neighbors, or your child may choose to
read quietly alone. Looking at pictures can qualify as reading
for a beginner. Other homework that you will see come home in
the homework folder are math Home Links, phonics worksheets,
and some reading. Homework is a way to build good study habits
in young children, a way to reinforce what we learn at school,
and a way to involve parents in their child's learning. Completion
of homework will be reflected in the"Takes responsibility"
grade on the report card.
Homework Folders and Planners
The volume of mail I am given to send home to you along with
papers your child does at school can be overwhelming. I
have provided a folder for each student so that the papers are
together and protected from tearing and crumpling in their backpack,
and it makes your job easier. You have one place to look for
papers each evening. Hopefully, you will look at the papers in
the folder each evening together. Only send back to school in
the folder those things that need to be returned, (homework,
signed papers, lunch money, messages for the teacher). The
folder is to be returned each and every day.
Schedule
PE with Mrs. Robinson and Music with Mrs. Von Protz are from
9:10 to 10:10 on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
Art with Mrs. Trager is every other Tuesday afternoon from 1:10.to
2:10.
Library with Ms. Collins is Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 to
1:40. Books may be checked out daily in order to promote interest
in reading.
Computer lab Monday and Friday afternoon from 1:15 to 1:45
Holidays/Parties
We will have three parties during the year: Fall, Winter Holidays,
and Spring (Valentine's Day).
Birthdays
If you would like your child's birthday celebrated in the classroom,
you may send treats to school the day of the birthday. We will
celebrate his/her birthday the last half hour of the day.
Sharing
The purpose of sharing
is to increase your child's oral language skills as well as to
help develop a positive self-image. Your enthusiasm and involvement
in the preparation of the Sharing activities will help your child
gain confidence and lead to greater success in oral skills. Please
have students bring sharing items only when requested or prior
arrangements have been made, and never allow students to bring
any type of weapon, toy or real. More information will be sent
when we have a schedule and topics.
Snacks
Because students use a lot of energy in the learning process,
we will have a snack daily. We will use that time to do the Question
of the day or Show and Share. Please send snacks to share with
the class. (i.e. goldfish, crackers, pretzels, cookies, cereals)
Book Orders
I will be sending home book order forms throughout the year.
Sometimes I send home forms from different companies. If you
would like your child to order, please make a check payable to
the specific Book Club. The date due to me will be written on
the form.
