Forbes' Forum

I want to welcome all of our new and returning students and families to Chinook! I hope you have had a chance to meet your child's teacher, if only briefly. We have had a busy start of the year but with all of our students now in class, things are starting to run smoothly.

I am Jon Forbes and I am the new principal jere at Chinook. If I haven't met you yet, please stop me and introduce yourself as you see me around the school. I am always available for questions and I usually have coffee in my office.

Our Open House is scheduled for September 12th and I hope you get the chance to come in and talk to your child's teacher. the communication between home and school is one of the biggest factors in student success and I feel must take place. All of our teachers are accessible by email or phone call before and after school.

Fore those that have been Chinook parents before, there have been some changes already at school this year. We have some different parking lot procedures and we will be talking more about those in future letters. Please be patient with staff who are out and making sure our students at Chinook are safe.

As these first couple of weeks pass, please continue to keep your children on a schedule. Late and absent students disrupt their own learning as well as the rest of the students in the class. It takes time away from the office staff as well as the teacher who has to take time out to catch the tardy/absent student up.

At Chinook we stress three responsibilities for students: To Be Respectful, To Be a Peacemaker, and To Follow Directions. We will be going over these with them continually throughout the year and you can help by asking them at home aobut what these mean as well.

Again, welcome to the beginning of a new school year. I am looking forward to working with the students and families here at Chinook. Feel free to contact the school with questions and concerns (or just come get a cup of coffee!).

Jon Forbes, Principal

The School Sistrict allows distribution of these notices as a means of providing information to parents about these various activities; however, the Anchorage School District does not operate, sponsor, or endorse any of these activities offered by other organizations.

In an attempt to keep our students safe this year, we are trying to prevent any adverse allergic reactions from occurring. If your child has an allergy to a food, animal, or other irritant, please contact us. We seem to have many students this year who have a severe nut allergy. To avoid allergic reactions, we are requesting that you do not send foods that will be served to the classroom that contain nuts (including peanut butter). It's better to be safe than sorry and avoid allergic reactions before they happen

We would appreciate any donations of gently used clothing especially small sized sweatpants for our "loaner collection". We try to have clothing to loan to children who fall in puddles or become wet during the school dat. If your child does borrow our clothing, please wash them and return them to the Nurse's office. Thank you!

As always, feel free to contact us with questions @ 742-6701. ................Amy Owens & Joanie Lyke, Chinook School Nurses

REMINDER: At the beginning of each school year students are given the same status of lunches (free or reduced) for 30 days that they had at the end of the prior year. This gives parents time to reapply and receive approval for the new year. You must apply each year. If a new application has not been received by the end of the 30 days, the student will be dropped form the program and will have to pay full meal prices. October 18th will be the last day of the 30 day same status period. Click here for more information about free and reduced price meal plans.

Students needing to charge their lunch will be calling their parents for permission to do so. There is a three charge limit. Students will not be allowed to charge more than three days in a row. Any student with three charges will be given a "cold pack" and milk at lunch time.

Elementary School cafeterias are no longer allowed to have a microwave or hot water available to the students. Please do not send lunches that require adding hot water or using the microwave.
