Health Services
Healthy students are successful learners. The school nurse has a multi-faceted role within the school setting that supports the physical, mental, emotional, and social health of students and their success in the learning process. The school nurse supports student success by providing health care assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting.

Students who become ill or injured during the school day should report to the nurse. If it is necessary to go home or to a doctor, the nurse will inform the parent/guardian and a Blue Pass will be issued. It is important that the school be kept informed of current phone numbers - home, work, cell, and emergency contacts.

If your student develops a significant health concern during the school year that may affect his/her performance at school, please notify the school nurse.

The Anchorage School District provides a wide range of health promotion services under the direction of the school nurse. Some of these are included in the following:

• Vision and hearing screening is conducted at specific grade levels. You will be notified when a further evaluation by a specialist is recommended. A student may be checked at any time a concern arises upon request to the nurse.

• Tuberculin testing is required by Alaska State law for all students new to our district. TB testing is also done for those students on certain jobs or enrolled in some King Career Center classes.

• Immunization requirements are established by law, and must be met for a student to enter and remain in school. Each student's records are reviewed at the time of registration, and annually thereafter. If a student receives an immunization, the official record of the new immunization should be shared with the school nurse. If a student needs further immunizations to meet legal requirements, you will be notified.

• Although we stress the importance of good attendance, a student who appears ill should remain at home. Please do not send sick students to school to be examined by the school nurse. This may expose others to unnecessary illnesses. The school does not provide any medication for a student who has a sore throat, headache, upset stomach, etc.

• The school nurse provides first aid for injuries that occur at school. If medical evaluation is necessary, the parent will be notified. In a major life threatening emergency the paramedics will be called.

•The school nurse must approve all medications that are used at school. Any student on medication for a chronic condition must have a medication form signed by the doctor and parent. This form must be renewed each year. Students are not allowed to carry any medication with them at school, except with approval of the nurse in special situations (requested by the doctor and parent). Students who require a prescribed medication temporarily (i.e. an antibiotic), and need to have a dose during school hours, must have a medication form signed by the parent and provide the medication in the prescription container. Over the counter acetaminophen and cold preparations (without alcohol) can be given by the nurse upon parent written request and provision of the medication.

• If a physical education excuse is necessary, the school nurse should be advised and can authorize the excuse for up to 3 days. If more than 3 days is required, a written note from a physician is necessary, specifying the length of time and the reason.

You are always welcome to call the school health office (742-2151) regarding your student’s health and well being.
