SMALLER LEARNING COMMUNITIES: WANT TO KNOW MORE?
East High School has created five smaller learning communities (SLCs) that have been utilized since the Fall of 2002. These SLCs are in line with the building changes being mandated by the revised Anchorage School District (ASD) Ed. Specs. The process for creating these SLCs was partially subsidized by a federal planning grant. During this process, research (Go to a page of SLC resources) repeatedly demonstrated the positive affects of incorporating SLCs within the large high school institutions prevalent across the United States, especially within urban schools of mixed ethnicity. The selection of staff for each SLC is complete, and the staff members of each community are currently working toward goals for each school year, and beyond. There is also the possibility of a federal implementation grant to help subsidize the time (See our timeline) needed to reach these goals. Student are routinely distributed among the various houses.
