How did it start?
Snowboarding started when a young surfer
named Sherman
Poppin wanted to ride on
snow. His first prototype was an about 1.20 m long plastic plank: two kids'
skis bolted together. It was a present for his daughter Wendy which soon was a
winner in the neighborhood. One year later, in 1965, his idea was put into
production. The first snowboard company was called Snurfer.
One Million Snurfers were sold the first year.
When was snowboarding made an Olympic sport?
Snowboarding became an Olympic sport in
1998. Canada’s
snowboarder Ross Rebagliati won the first gold medal
in the snowboarding Olympics. Then three days later he was tested positive for
marijuana and his medal was taken from him, but then they found out that
marijuana was not banned from the Olympics and only banned from the ISF
(International Ski Federation) so there for his medal was returned.
