Costume Catastrophe

By Ashley Trow

It’s Halloween, and everybody is deciding what he or she is going to be.  There is one problem and it is that you don’t have a costume!  Halloween was so much easier when we were two and our mothers picked out our costumes, but now we are older and won’t settle for the classic pumpkin costume.  We all want that special, appropriate, one-of-a-kind costume and the one that everyone envies. The simplest ideas can be altered to become the ultimate costume.

For the girls, a princess may seem so second grade, but even older kids can find our happily ever after!  Find a dress that is simple, elegant, or crazy.  If the neckline is too low, the world isn’t coming to an end.  Just wear a camisole or tank top under the dress that covers up the bare area.  Sheer white tights can make even the craziest of dresses look classy.  A pair of short white gloves can dress it up a little more, and a small crown won’t hurt.  A touch of glitter and you’re ready for your prince charming!

Store-bought costumes are always fun, but if you can’t afford one or you just want to experiment with what you have at home, that’s still just as fun.  A lacy skirt or even an old pair of baggy sweats cut below the knee would do.  An extremely billowy top with a rope belt or even a bulky fashion belt can be wrapped around your middle.  Gold bangles can add a flashy touch to the costume.  Put your hair up into a messy bun or ponytail use an elastic fabric headband, and you’ve got a classic costume.

Share the Love…

Or Not

By Anna Greene

Share the love, right?  I mean, it’s only natural for us to have dates and crushes and so on, but the teachers are telling us to lay off.  It makes a little sense, right?  But, then again, why should we?

Well I can answer that for you.  For starters, it’s quite a distraction.  Another problem is it creates a lot of negative rumors.  I’m sure that the teachers, security, and even our counselors don’t want to be flooded with complaints of teasing and mockery.

Another thing you should consider is to ask yourself why are we here as students?  School is NOT a dating service.  On behalf of the student body and the teachers and principles, please leave romantic actions for your next date, movie, or hang time. At least leave it for outside of the school grounds.

Un-Educational Picnic

By Mara James

The Outback Team has found a fun way to meet and have fun together with their students and families without having to think about school.  Ms. Malecha, Mr. Denny, Mr., Cresap, Mrs. Trotter, and Ms. Blyden decided to have a fun-filled barbecue, which was a great way to establish relationships while in a comfortable atmosphere.

The picnic took place on Thursday, September 20 in the relocatables on the West Side of the school.  All of the Outback team was invited to talk, eat, and have fun with their teachers.  This is something that usually comes around once in a blue moon.

You treat me, or I’ll trick you!

By: Ashley Claggett and Anna Greene

Have you ever wondered where Halloween came from?  The Romans and the Celts first brought up the tradition of worshiping their Gods on the night before November 1st (October 31st).   Samhain, the death God of their religion, called together the wicked spirits or souls which had been condemned to live as an animal for the past year.  They would sacrifice to their gods so they would protect them.

In ancient times, people believed that the strange spirits, ghosts, witches and elves, would hurt them. Irish farmers would go from door to door begging for food. The food was supposed to be for their god’s village Halloween celebration. The farmers would yell, “You treat me or I’ll trick you!”   By doing this it would promise good luck to the people who gave them food.   “Jack-o-lantern’s” were known as a hurt soul. Maybe that is why so many carved pumpkins have such scary and sad faces.  At least we now know where Halloween comes from!

National Junior Honor Society

At our first meeting in September we reviewed the expectations for membership, fundraising ideas, and service projects.  Students are expected to earn 15 service hours this year, including school and community projects.  NJHS meetings are located in the library the last fifteen minutes of 8th grade lunch.  Students should listen to the daily announcements for meeting times.  Mrs. Huseman is the sponsor.  Feel free to contact her with any questions.
