Notes from Nurse Beckett

I am in the nursing office from 10:00a to 2:30p Monday thru Friday. There are times when my hours flex due to other student needs. If you need to talk directly to me, please call before coming to school.

As we begin another school year, here are several health policies that parents need to be aware of:

Guidelines for keeping children home from school:
Fever
- Over 100 degrees F. They should be fever free without the help of medication for 24 hours before returning to school.

Diarrhea/Vomiting - Keep them home if they have either of these within the last 24 hours.

Colds - As long as a child has symptoms (runny nose, cough, sneezing) he/she is contagious and should be kept home. This is especially true during the first three days of the symptoms.

Pink Eye - Children cannot come to school while the eye is draining or if he/she wakes up and his/her eye lashes have 'crusty' residue. The child may not be touching his/her eye while it is still red. If they are unable to keep their hands away from their eyes, they will have to stay home until the irritation is gone.

If they are ill, keep them home to rest and recuperate. Do not send them to school to be 'checked by the nurse.' It is unfair to expose other healthy students to unnecessary germs.

If a parent ever has a concern or question about health related issues, please call Nurse Beckett at 277-7681.

ASD Medical Policy

Children may receive medication at school. It is School District policy that all medication be administered and supervised by the school nurse. In the interest of safety for all children, we do not allow students to bring medication to school to be self administered (this includes cough drops). All medications must be delivered to the school nurse by an adult. In order for your child to receive medications at school, we need a signed authorization form. These forms are available from your school nurse, most physicians as well as you can download them.

Authorization for Self-Carry/Administration of Medicine (PDF format) - Parent permission form allowing for a responsible, trained student to carry and/or self administer prescription labeled medication for asthma, severe allergic (anaphylactic) reaction, or diabetes.

Short-Term Medications (PDF format) - Prescriptions needed for three weeks or less. A current pharmacy labeled container must be brought to school with authorization form signed by the parent.

Long Term Medications (PDF format) (over three weeks) - Require both parent and physician authorization to be on file with the nurse.

Long Term Non-Prescription Medication Request (PDF format) - Parent permission form for requesting the district give non-prescription medicine under certain conditions.

Student Asthma Action Card (PDF format) - Parent permission to be on file with the nurse.
