Statement of Program
Inlet View is truly a traditional neighborhood school located in a well-established neighborhood in downtown Anchorage. Families choose to live and return to the neighborhood due to the unique location in the heart of the city.

At Inlet View, we strive to develop healthy bodies and strong minds through an enthusiastic learning environment which stresses the basic curriculum. We are a small family oriented school with approximately 210 students. The staff is dedicated and very experienced, emphasizing academic achievement and mastery of basic skills to meet the State Student Performance Standards at each grade level.

Citizenship development is promoted through various community oriented activities such as our Student Leadership and Green Star programs. We strive to help each student become the best he or she can be.

Parents are a key component to our school's success and take an active role in the educational programs through PTA, working in the classrooms and volunteering for special projects and events. The Camp Fire Program provides before and after school childcare services for working parents.

School Mission
The mission of the Inlet View staff is to provide a warm, loving atmosphere for all children that enhances learning and self-esteem building. We strive to maintain high academic and behavioral standards for all students and build the necessary skills needed for success in life. Our academic and school goals include improving reading, writing and math achievement and improving disaster preparedness and school safety.

Tardies
Any student who arrives late must go to the front office and receive a permission slip to enter their classroom. Students with medical appointments are considered excused but should still come to the office to receive a permission slip. Students who are regularly tardy will be subject to disciplinary action by the school.

Absences
Any student absences should be reported to the school first thing in the morning. Class assignments, homework, and tests missed during the student's absence should be completed within two days after the student returns to school.

Good attendance is encouraged for academic learning and for developing good habits for the future as a working adult. However, if your child is ill, allow your child to remain home until the illness has run its course. A measure we use to determine illness is a temperature of 100 degrees or above, or sub normal temperature. If this happens to a child at school, parents or guardian will be notified. Please be sure that they picked up as soon as possible.

Drop Off/Pick Up
To keep things running smoothly and to be safe it is imperative that you familiarize yourself with the map below. For the safety of our children it is imperative that drop off and pick up soon in the designated areas.

Please keep in mind the following:

  • When dropping your child/children off in the front parking lot line, wait your turn and keep moving.
  • Do not wait in the car while they line up to enter the building. Doing so blocks traffic and forces the drivers behind you to back up.
  • Have your child ready to exit the car. Checking for last minute items, hugs and kisses, coats, hats and gloves, can be arranged in the driveway at home.
  • Passengers must exit the cars on the right side only. They should step onto the sidewalk.
  • Do not leave your car unattended.
  • If you part in the lot or on the street, walk your child to the school sidewalk.
  • Keep students safe.
  • Let's model good behavior and manners we want our children to have...

Bus Transportation
Students who live beyond one mile of school are transported by bus. Schedules and route information are available through the Pupil Transportation Office, the school office, and the Anchorage School District website.

Bus Behavior Expectations
A student may ride the bus as long as behavior is acceptable to established safety and behavior standards. If problems occur, the bus driver refers the student to the principal who counsels, reprimands, contacts parents and may suspend bus privileges for chronic problems. After three serious offenses, an automatic one week bus suspension will be considered.

Each student will be expected to:

  • Speak and act respectfully to the bus personnel and others on the bus.
  • Board and exit bus in a safe and organized manner.
  • Use indoor voices on the bus, no profanity or name-calling.
  • Keep hands to self; no physical contact with other bus riders.

Visitors
You are welcome to visit the school anytime throughout the year. Any time you are visiting, please stop by the front office to sign in before heading to your destination. It is also important that you record the time in and the time out. We use this information to account for your safety in the event of a fire drill. Please wear a visitor's badge which will indicate to our staff that you have stopped by the office.

Volunteers
There are plenty of places where you can volunteer and make a difference at Inlet View. Volunteering can be a fun experience. You will have a chance to meet the staff, other parents and catch a taste of what life at Inlet View is all about. Take a look at the list for an area you would be interested in helping out.

Parent Involvement
Parents play a critical role in the education of their children. Parental involvement in its various forms positively impacts student achievement. The Anchorage School District is committed to continuing strong partnerships with parents in the education of their children.

Medications
Medication may be administered at school if the following procedures have been followed (medication is defined as all prescription and over-the-counter drugs):

  • Forms have been completed by physician, parent and principal for non-prescription medication, short term medication (two weeks or less) or long term medication;
  • Forms have been completed by parent and principal for medication to be given for more than two weeks;
  • Medications must be in the original container issued by the pharmacy.

Releasing Students
For the protection of our students and to prevent unauthorized and unwanted persons from taking children from school prior to dismissal, the following procedures will be followed:

  • Persons picking up children are to report to the office and be prepared to identify themselves.
  • Do not go directly to classroom to pick up child. Teachers have been instructed not to release children without authorization from the office.
  • When using telephone to request early dismissal, please be prepared to establish your identify, or to expect a call back so that we can verify you as the caller. You will still be required to come to the office to pick up your child. We will not have the child waiting outside for you to pick them up.

Lunch and Lunchroom Behavior
Parents are expected to provide a daily, healthy lunch for their child or send it money for hot lunch. Students are not allowed to leave the school campus during lunch, the office must have a written parental request for the student to leave followed by parent check out in the school office at the time of departure. Parents are welcome to have lunch with their child in the lunchroom after checking in at the office.

Hot lunch tickets can be purchased for your child by the day, week or month. With this system, each student has a computer account. Please include the student's name on the checks sent to the school. When a student does not have a lunch or lunch money, an emergency hot lunch will be provided and should bring the full amount the following day. Free and reduced lunches are available to qualifying students.

Lunch prices are:

Notes and telephone calls from parents cannot be accepted as a form of permission to attend a trip.

Transfers and Withdrawals
Should it become necessary to transfer or withdraw your student during the school year, please notify the school office several days in advance. The staff needs time to process your child's records.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher conferences occur at the end of the first quarter and third quarter for all students. This is a great time for teachers and parents to review progress, strengths, weaknesses, and to set future goals. These conferences are scheduled on an individual and private basis. If you have other siblings at Inlet View, the teachers work together on scheduling the conferences at consecutive times when possible.

Teachers may request a conference with you or you may initiate a request for a conference regarding your child. Conferences are scheduled at periods other than instructional time. Speak with your child's teacher to schedule a time and date to meet.

During fire drills, all persons, including adults in the school, are to leave the building and participate in the activity.

Earthquake and civil defense drills are practiced routinely with the students.

Bicycles
Students who ride bicycles should know the laws and safety rules for operation and obey them. Due to aspects of Alaska State Law and Safety, elementary students are not to drive motorized vehicles to school at any time.

Make sure you have turned in a permission slip before riding your child rides their bike to school.

  • Anchorage Municipal code 9.38.010 requires that bicycle helmets be worn by any person fifteen years of age or younger.

A student's clothing attire and general appearance should not be of such extremes that it draws undue attention to the student nor should his or her attire and appearance distract or interfere with the learning and teaching in the classroom. Since students are required to go outside for recess and take part in PE and other activities, they must be suitably dressed. Positive habits of cleanliness and neatness should be developed at an early age.
