Inlet View Elementary is a small (about 300 students) K-6 school located near downtown Anchorage, Alaska. It draws students from several neighborhoods, including Bootlegger Cove, the Westchester Lagoon area and the quiet residential streets around the Delaney Park Strip.

Inlet View has a cohesive staff and a very positive, progressive school atmosphere. Some of the teachers have been at the school for a number of years and some are new, but they all have one thing in common: they love their work-site.

The administration of Inlet View is committed to meeting the needs of all the students who come to the school for the all-important formative years in public education. Principal Joanne McCabe works very hard to provide a positive learning environment for the children under her care, and in doing so she has earned the admiration and respect of staff and parents alike.

The parents of Inlet View's students tend to be very involved in their children's educations, and perhaps this is one of the main reasons these kids consistently score well above average on standardized achievement tests.

Among the special programs available at the Inlet View site is the Elementary Gifted Enrichment Program, also known as IGNITE (Including Gifted Needs In Today's Education). The Inlet View site serves over 120 identified gifted students from three other area schools as well as those from Inlet View itself.

Inlet View also boasts a strong Special Education program and service in Speech and Occupational/Physical Therapy as well. There is bilingual support for those students who are gaining proficiency in English as a second language. The technology program is moving along apace as there are several staff members who have strong backgrounds in computers and other educational technology.

Academically, the staff at Inlet View is a mix of teachers who are individually and collectively strong in science, math, humanities and the language arts. Teachers often switch off with each other in order to maximize their strengths in one discipline or another, and shared ideas and resources are the rule rather than the exception. The music, art and physical educators at Inlet View are recognized as being among the best in their respective fields.

Holding it all together is a support staff composed of an extremely competent and personable Administrative Assistant, Secretary and a Building Plant Operator who is willing to come in early and stay late to make sure the building runs efficiently and safely. None of these people is satisfied to leave the building until everything that needs to be done has been done.

For that matter, the same can be said for the entire staff. Everyone is willing to go the extra mile when it comes to making sure Inlet View's children receive an opportunity to reach their full potential in a safe, nurturing, yet challenging environment.
