Welcome to 2007-2008 at Jane Mears Middle School!
The Mears PTSA welcomes you and invites you to join as a member. By joining the PTSA, you will have a better understanding of the workings of Mears Middle School and will have voting rights and influence over the spending of PTSA funds. Your child will benefit too, as your involvement will show your child you care about his/her education.

Where does the $$ come from?

School Store

 Magazine Fundraiser

PTSA membership (about $1.50 out of the $8 membership fee)
Memory Books (We want these affordable, and to at least break even)
School Dances and school sports events (refreshments)
eScrip (Have you signed up yet? Just go to www.escrip.com and enter your Carrs Grocery card number today. It helps in a big way!)
Private donations

Where does the $$ go?

In the past few years, here are some of the things purchased by the PTSA:

1. 2002-2003 - A huge curtain to cordon off the gym so two classes can use the facility simultaneously.

2. 2003-2004 - $25,000 in technology upgrades.

3. 2004-2005 - Numerous teacher grants including new Panther Pride Newsletter software for the office staff; funding two teachers attendance at the National Science Teachers Conference; $6,200 on eMac computers for the teaching staff; digital camera to support photos for the Memory Book; a violin for the orchestra; LCD projectors for the teachers in the portables; supplies for the ESL program; and some other things I undoubtedly forgot.

4. 2005-2006 New Nordic skis, boots and bindings, AK Sea Life Traveling Program for Matanuska Team, three more LCD projectors, piano benches, enhancements to the Special Ed program, and much more.

PTSA has also used its volunteers and/or funds throughout the year to support school dances, the food portion of Open House night, Red Ribbon (Drug Awareness) Week, teacher/staff appreciation and assisting with the Memory Books.

Try to remember when your teen brings home magazine fundraiser forms and membership forms; it's for a good cause.  It's for your kids!

Goals for 2007-2008

1. Getting more parents and students involved. After all,  it is called the PARENT TEACHER STUDENT ASSOCIATION.  While we appreciate the help from the same 15-20 parents who steadfastly volunteer, we'd like to see new faces too. And weÕd love to get some input from students as to what theyÕd like to see happening at their school.  We've gotten a good start with so many of you signing up for volunteer opportunities during registration. We'll be calling you, as the need arises, to ask for your help.  You can contact us too if you want to help and we'll be happy to put you to work!

2. Simplify our fundraising. I'd like to see more of you sign up for eScrip. It's so easy and it costs you nothing. If you have five minutes, you can log onto www.escrip.com, sign up your Carrs grocery card or any debit or credit cards. Just indicate Mears PTSA as the organization. Every time you use your Carrs card, 3% of that sale is donated to the school. When you use your debit or credit cards at eScrip merchants, a donation is made to Mears PTSA. You don't have to do anything but make the purchases you were already going to make. How easy is that? This program could virtually eliminate the need for any other fundraiser.
