T.I.G.E.R Reading Club

T.I.G.E.R stands for for Traveling into Great Exciting Reading.  The T.I.G.E.R reading club is recreational in nature.  Student and teachers participation is voluntary.  However, teachers strongly encourage all students to participate, and members receive public recognition during awards assemblies.

Responsibilities:

Responsibility is one of the building blocks we work on at Northern Lights ABC School.  The following list details the responsibilities expected of reading club members.

Predetermined Monthly Reading Goals:

Classroom reading goal:

Collectively, every student in a classroom, including the teacher, attempts to read as many pages as possible above and beyond the monthly reading goal.  One purpose is for a class to win the specified trophies and the meet the club's overall yearly reading goal.

The Tiger Reading Club's Yearly Goal:

At the beginning of the school year the Tiger Reading Club sets a new yearly reading goal. Every single member's reading tallies (all students and all teachers) go towards achieving the yearly reading goal.  Currently the club's yearly reading goal is set at 4 million pages.

Reading tally sheets for the month of May, June, July, and August are combined, tallied and used for the first month of the school year.  For the months of September-April tally sheets are logged monthly.

Prizes:

Double Goal:

December and March are double goal months. To reach a double goal, students in kindergarten need to read 1,000 pages. Students in grades 1-6 need to read 1,400 pages There is no shortage of "Beanie Babies" up for grabs, so read like the wind and take advantage of School Breaks! Log all the pages that you have read because we don't want you to miss out.

  Reading Material:

Participants are encouraged to read a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction material in a variety of genres at school and at home. (Realistic fiction, mystery, historical fiction, science fiction, animal, sports, poetry, graphic navels such as Bone, Babymouse, Tintin, etc.). Picture books, biographies, Betty and Veronica books and Captain Underpants books do qualify as valid reading material for the program. A book and tape kit is acceptable, as well as a teacher sharing a book, with multi copies of the same title which students are reading at the same time.

Although stories are enjoyed in other formats, the following materials will not be counted towards a participants reading log: records, books on tapes, thin comic books in a magazine format, newspapers and textbooks. If you are uncertain about a particular item, please see the Tiger Reading Volunteer Crew Leader.

Does this Reading Count? (YES!) A parent, guardian, friend, sibling, babysitter, relative, teacher, librarian or any other individual is welcome to read to a participant.

Kindergarten: Each kindergarten student automatically receives a credit of 150 school read pages per month, even if they don't submit a log sheet for that month. Although a favorite book may have been read multiple times, the title may only be logged once per month. When the same kindergarten teacher teaches two section of the same grade, their reading tallies will be distributed the following way: 150 pages will be automatically assigned to each section taught, monthly. The teacher only gets a personal credit of 150 pages monthly. This formula applies to the teachers personal reading as well. Personal pages are assigned to each section taught monthly, but only recorded once monthly.

1st Grade: Each student in first grade automatically receives a credit of 200 school read pages per month, even if they don't submit a log sheet for that month. Although a favorite book may have been read multiple times, the title may only be logged once every other month.

2-6 Grade: Although a favorite book may have been read multiple times, the title may only be logged once every other month.

Principal: The number of pages the principal reads during the school year is deducted from the total number of pages read by the other participants.

Helpful Hints to encourage Students to Log Their Book Titles:

Put the "Book List Log Sheet" on the refrigerator with a magnet.

  1. The student leaves his/her books in a safe place until the title and pages can be recorded.

  2. Students and parents share in the logging of title and pages.

  3. Students keep a log sheet in their desk for logging books read at school.

  4. Students can create a form on the computer and keep track of their reading. At the end of the month the log can be printed and submitted.

  5. Students can print additional "Book List Log Sheets".

Announcements Over the Intercom Before Dismissal:

Around the 25th of each month an announcement will be made regarding the prior month's totals, how many pages remaining to the goal, the prior month's primary and intermediate classroom trophy winners, and the prior month's classroom grade trophy winners.

End of the month announcements will remind participants to get their "Book List Log Sheet" in promptly.
