Spring Fever and Safety Concerns

Denise Demetree-Trombley, Principal

It’s April.  With only five weeks of school left, summer feels so close you can practically taste it!  There’s restlessness in the air.  There’s an “ants-in-the-pants” feeling that hits everyone at this time of year called spring fever.  Mother Nature sends it around every year, and every year we “catch” it.

Spring brings picnics and flowers, sunshine and baseball.  Spring fever brings with it a variety of misbehavior.  For many of us, we’re more likely to become dreamy or restless during the spring than at any other time.  In this season, children are filled with spring fever, facing mixed emotions about the end of the school year, anxiety about summer, and fearing how it may be next year.  And, they may be undergoing developmental changes as well.  As a result, many students forget rules and expectations.  The longer the symptoms of spring fever last, the longer the misbehavior will be around.  Imagine, then, what it’s like to be a teacher, bus driver, cafeteria worker, or playground attendant when spring fever arrives and forgets to leave.  On top of this, the adults working and living with kids have their own spring fever to cope with.

Perhaps we can learn a lesson from spring fever misbehavior of children and the restless dissatisfaction adults are experiencing.  Restlessness is in the air because change is in the air.  One season is changing into another season.  Change means things are going to be different.  Spring brings positive change in our lives.  It is a time to look ahead.  It is the perfect time to remember that each day is a new possibility.

Safety Concerns

Whenever motor vehicles and pedestrian traffic mix, the possibilities of accidents rise.  Very slow driving and constant alertness is imperative wherever people are walking or vehicles are parked.  Remember, there is no parking on along the school side of Zarvis.  Also, the school side of the driveway is a fire lane and is for dropping off or picking up students only.  Yield to school buses.  Do not block the crosswalk.  Also, U-turns are unlawful in the intersection.  Budget extra time.  Our parking lot and side streets are congested, so please allow for more time to get to school by 3:30 p.m. to pick up your student.  If you are planning on visiting the classroom or staying to play on the playground, you need to park in the parking lot.

Many folks are forgetful and must be reminded of the rules of safe conduct in parking lots, whether walking or driving, until the proper performance becomes second nature.  Our teachers and staff are present at various locations around the school to insure student safety and to remind you of the expectations.  They see the whole picture as it develops and are experienced in the patterns of behaviors that occur on a consistent basis.  If you keep reminding yourself that when behind the wheel of your vehicle proper conduct is expected, that continuous caution and concern for safety to others is the only right way, you make the parking lot and side streets safe for yourself and others.

After School

The weather is very nice outside.  It is warming up, and the sun is shining more often.  With that comes more lingering after school.  I see parents talking with other parents and children playing.  What a wonderful time to connect with the community.  Please remember, at 3:40 p.m. teachers are no longer supervising children.  So, parents, remember you need to be aware of where your children are, which should be close by, so that we can continue to keep them safe.  Students who walk home need to go directly home at dismissal.

Register online for next school year

Online registration will give parents the option to register returning students online, eliminating the need to register in person.

Is your child returning to our school next year?  If so, you can register him/her online from the comfort of your home.  The district is implementing an online registration system through Zangle ParentConnection for all returning students starting with the 2014-2015 school year.

If you do not have your Zangle ParentConnection PIN/Password, please contact our office.

The online registration window is July 7 – August 8.

Online registration will only be available for returning students.  New-to-district students will still need to enroll in person at the school or at the central enrollment event over the summer.  Transferring students will also need to register in person.  If you miss the online registration period, you may still register in person at the school at the beginning of August.

Questions about online registration should be directed to our front office.

Next Lottery Date

All students who wish to attend Rogers Park’s neighborhood program and do not live in the attendance area must apply for a Zone Exemption.  The deadline for the next lottery is 3:00 p.m., July 25, 2014.  The lottery is used to determine the neighborhood program’s waitlist.  Students currently on the waitlist do not need to submit a new application.  Please use your Parent Connect PIN and password to access the lottery website.  If you have any questions, please contact the Rogers Park office at 742-4810.
