Romig Middle School PTSA Board Meeting
December 12, 2007

Attendance:
Wendy Feuer, Jenny Redick, Principal Sven Gustafson, Alicia de la Cruz

Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 12:06 p.m. Wendy Feuer presided, as President Valerie Marks was unable to attend.

Approval of Minutes:
The minutes from the November board meeting were read and approved.

President's Report:
The West/Romig remodel meeting had approximately 120 participants, about one-half of which were students. Unfortunately, the group of attendees was not as diverse as the schools' populations, so more work needs to be done to draw input from all groups who will be using the facility. The results of the clicker survey regarding what the public wants in the remodel were similar to the results of the survey from the meeting at Willowcrest Elementary. A letter was written to Governor Palin on the subject of the remodel, as she was coming to West to visit a government class and to present her plan for school spending. The next step in the remodel is that consultants will meet with the steering committee, present their report, and funding will be sought so work can begin on a master plan.

Treasurer's Report:
There is currently $11,612 in the PTSA checking account. The missing eScrip funds that were not paid last year have now been deposited. Alicia paid the first magazine invoice, and PTSA has made approximately $2600 so far. There has been one NSF order; Alicia wrote a letter to the family and will follow up.

Membership Report:
Karen Grey-Levine was unable to attend. However, it was noted that PTSA has three new members.

Principal's Report:
o The Spanish Immersion program has ten students going to Puerto Rico over spring break. These students will be working hard to raise money for this trip. Principal Gustafson will be going with another staff member to help form partnerships for repeat visits. Principal Gustafson requested funds to cover the cost of his trip, and the PTSA board approved a grant of $1000 for this purpose.
o Principal Gustafson is initiating a partnership with CME to supply mentors for students whose parents do not come into school during conferences.
o Audrey Richardson has won a Denali Award - the highest award for service in the Anchorage School District. The presentation of this award will take place on January 14. Principal Gustafson thanks Wendy and the staff members who wrote letters in support of Audrey.
o At this time, the Romig student body is 64% minority, and the teaching staff is 20% minority. This is the highest level of teacher diversity in the district, but more can be done in this area.
o Last Saturday was the first writing retreat for students with difficulty writing. Thirty-five students were invited and 22 attended. The theme was CSI.
o The band is on tour this week, and there will be more orchestra, band, and choir concerts next week.
o Principal Gustafson is prioritizing his legislative requests as follows: 1) Master planning for the remodel; 2) Purchasing additional smart boards; 3) Library tables and chairs; 4) Laptop cart.

The meeting adjourned at 1:01 p.m.
