The red panda is almost extinct because of loss of habitat. They live in fir forests, high mountains, dense bamboo, and beech, usually found near water. They live in mountainous regions in Asia. The have long bushy tails, and their undercoat is soft and wooly. Their wiskers look like a cat's, but because of its flat nose and striped face, its looks like a racoon. They are more related to racoons than to giant pandas. Also, their teeth are wide and powerful. They are about the size of a house cat. They eat young bamboo leaves, fruits, nuts, berries, mushrooms, grass, bark, lichen, insects, bird eggs, mice, and bamboo rats. They have one to four cubs each year. The red pandas spend most their time in trees on high branches. They sleep curled up on a branch. They are most active during dusk. The red panda lives to be about 14 years old in captivity and eight to ten years old in the wild.
