Habitats and Habits

The Giant Panda usually lives in the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi. Pandas use a hollow log or tree stump for their den. They live in the mountains at an elevation of about 4,000 feet to 11,500 feet. There is not much panda habitat left; only about 5,400 square miles.

In the winter pandas do not hibernate because their diet of bamboo is not very nutritious. They don't gain enough fat to keep warm in the winter. Pandas are a dying species because they can not reproduce fast enough. The can't have cubs until they are four and lots of them could die before than. There are less than a 1,000 left on earth. The panda can only have one or two cubs each year in the summer and the perfect habitat for the panda is growing scarce.

The panda is a dying species because poachers kill the animals for their pelts. One panda pelt is worth as much as a rural farmer makes in ten years. Many breeding attempts have been attempted, but most have failed.
